THE EAST

Cabinet Appointment Rumor--Indian
Bureau--Gen. Grant on the Pacific
Railroad Subsidies.

NEW YORK, Dec. 24.--The Sun learns from good authority that Elihu B. Washburne will be Secretary of the Interior under Gen. Grant.
Col. Wynkoop, in an address last night to the American Geographical Society, defended the Indian Bureau against the charges made against it, and said that as the Bureau now exists he could not see how it could be bettered.
Gen. Grant is reported to have said to Congressmen yesterday, with whom he had an interview on the subject of subsidies to the Pacific Railroad, that no matter what may be said about the prospective benefit we are to derive from these roads, it is too long to wait, and we should make the best possible use of our present resources without increasing the burden of our debt by incurring expensive risks, which are hazardous. The Congressmen who were present at this interview were astonished at the frankness with which the General expressed his views, while they one and all pledged him their support. The General at the same time gave his opinion that there should be an extra session of the 41st Congress.
