Complaint of Official Discrimination
Against Veterans Enlivens Gathering.

Reminiscences of the Spanish and civil wars by Senator Miles Poindexter, of Washington, made the meeting of the G. A. R. Oyster Club, held last night at Schmidt's, 702 Seventh street northwest, a memorable one.
Jere Costello, department commander of Spanish war veterans, pleaded for a square deal for his comrades in government employ, and said there were men in official life who refused to deal squarely with soldiers of the Spanish and civil wars and discriminated against them.
"There are some men in authority in the government who have a contempt for the soldier and the flag, and whose unpatriotic actions and absolute disregard for law give them no more right in this country than the most undesirable alien," continued Mr. Costello.
"Some of our comrades will be high in the councils of President Wilson, and with their aid I believe a few examples will stop the pernicious practice of displacing soldiers without cause."
The chair of the late William H. Bailey, once president of the G. A. R. Oyster Club, was decorated with flowers and draped with the United States flag.
Other speakers who added to the entertainment were Capt. Thomas H. McKee, John Lewis Smith, G. E. Rausch, John Murphy, S. M. Burkett, W. H. Evans, E. M. Wyncoop, and Capt. W. H. Daly, vice president of the club, who presided.
Others present were L. H. Patterson, secretary; A. H. Chase, Isaac Williamson, J. W. Clark, Frank Jones, Daniel Coughlin, E. Finley Kitson, and J. Balgate.
