Notes:

Finding records on family members who served in the War of 1812 has proved to be something of a challenge, as most of the people who participated served with local militia groups and were not part of a national army raised by Congress. As a result these records are kept by state governments and not by the National Archives. The National Archives has spoiled many of us by making the search for military records from later wars much easier by providing a sort of one-stop shopping mall for them. (I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I've certainly benefitted enormously from their services over the years.) It does mean, however, that progress on this particular list of combatants will probably be slow and painful.

The best single source of names, incomplete as it is, can be found in the Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America, Volume 2, which can be found online at the American Memory Collection on the Library of Congress website. The collection is searchable, but frankly, as the documents have been OCR'd, (a process which does not produce an even remotely accurate transcription of the document), it will take a lot of patience and creativity to ferret out all the names you're searching for.

The War of 1812 began officially on June 18, 1812 and ran till January of 1815 when the British were defeated at the Battle of New Orleans. The Treaty of Ghent had actually ended the War of 1812 on December 24th, 1814, two weeks before the Battle of New Orleans was fought, but the treaty wasn't ratified by Congress and proclaimed until February 18, 1815. Thus, you will find that many soldiers' terms of service ran into that year. The pages of the Senate Executive Journal are filled with lists of soldiers and officers recommended for advancement, and on occasion even the last names of some of the dead officers they are being recommended to replace. Other than that it is rare that soldiers' deaths are recorded here. As a researcher, you will probably do better to rely on records from state archives, family histories and even oral tradition to fill in some of these blanks.

I'd love to hear from you.

    All my best,

    Chris
