Letter From Camp Weld.
________

                                                                 CAMP WELD, Feb. 11th, 1862.
MESSRS. EDITORS:--In the Colorado Republican of yesterday, the editor, in his remarks upon an article in your paper of the 8th, says that he "received a communication from Capt. Downing, of the first Regiment, which communication was doubtless intended as a nominal answer in refutation of some trivial charge of 'Union,' but was, what we conceived, in hearty, yet equivocal support of the very measures for the attainment of the object, for which 'Union' was originated; and a careful perusal of the 'answer to Union,' led us into the suspicion that the author of 'Union' and Capt. Downing, were one and the same person," &c.
Now, Mr. Editor, it appears by reading the "answer to Union," above alluded to, that it did not emanate from Capt. Downing alone, but the authorship was assumed by each subscriber thereto, from Major Chivington, through the list, to Capt. Wynkoop; therefore, as he has endeavored to implicate the officers of the First Regiment in the "Union," they are equally with him, in the editorial above alluded to, charged with "treachery," and a wish to rid the Territory of the military force now here, and thus give our citizens up to all the horrid realities of "treason stratagem and spoils, under secession rule."
It appears to us, that if the editor of the Republican was honest in his "suspicion," he would be the last one to suppose that the presence of the First Regiment would help the case any. In truth, we are compelled to believe that the editor of the Republican is maliciously inclined towards our officers, therefore, as we feel that we cannot, consistently continue our subscription for the Republican, as heretofore, we desire that your Carrier may call at the quarters of Company D, Camp Weld, and we will make arrangements with him for such a number of the DAILY NEWS as we may want.
                                                                                 PRIVATES Co. D,
                                                                                    1st Reg't Col. Vols.
