THE AMATUER PERFORMANCE.--The old Apollo was crowded last evening. We cannot fairly claim our usual privilege, and indulge in general criticisms upon the performance. Amateurs are not expected to strut their brief hour on the stage with the grace and dignity of practiced actors, nor can perfection be looked for where only brief time is taken for preparation and rehearsal. All things considered, however, the entertainment last evening was a success. We have sometimes seen Pizzaro worse performed than last evening, and often a great deal better.
Mr. Totten dressed and acted the part of the Peruvian conqueror very well, but he was a little too stagey, and "phrenzied" altogether too much. But many of his passages were well delivered, and he was frequently warmly applauded. Ned. Wynkoop, as Rolla, acquitted himself with much credit. He has a capital voice, deports himself gracefully and easily, and with training and experience would make a first rate actor.
The Misses Wakely as Elvira, and Cora, attracted much attention. Miss Louisa particularly, was perfect in her part, and acted throughout with dignity and grace.--We might particularize further, but time and space will not permit. The singing and dancing were both good. In the afterpiece, Mr. Wanless elicited frequent rounds of applause in his character of O'Brien.--Most of the amateurs were called before the curtain at the close of the pieces, and all seemed satisfied wih the performance. One hundred and fifty tickets were taken at the door, and probably many more were sold to parties who could not or did not attend.
