Missionary gives an Interesting Lecture
on Conditions in the East.

Rev. T. S. Wyncoop, who was for eight years a resident of India, lectured before the National Geographic Society at the First Congregational Church last night on "India: Characteristics of Her People and Government." The lecture was illustrated by a number of lantern views showing the magnificent temples of India and interesting street scenes.
Rev. Wyncoop dwelt for a time upon the spread of the bubonic plague and the great havoc which it wrought among the natives. He also gave a most interesting account of the famine and the conditions which brought about its widespread distress among the ignorant population. In reviewing the English colonial system, Rev. Wyncoop took occasion to pay a compliment to the English government for the strict civil service rules which permitted of promotion only upon merit. The views shown were most complete, and the lecture throughout was listened to with great interest by the large audience.
