Interesting Letter from the Former Pastor
of the Western Presbyterian Church.

Rev. T. S. Wynkoop, now a missionary at Allahabad, India, and until last summer the successful and beloved pastor of the Western Presbyterian Church, this city, for the past fifteen years, has written an interesting letter to his friend, Rev. Silliman Blagden, of Boston, which doubtless will be read with great interest by his many friends and parishioners in Washington. Allahabad, where Mr. Wynkoop is stationed, is on the river Ganges, about 850 miles northeast of Bombay. Mr. Wynkoop writes as follows:
"Our journey to India was prosperous in every way. We reached Allahabad on the 30th of December, having visited London, Paris, Florence, Rome, Cairo, and other places. We spent three days in Bombay, and then had 844 miles by rail here.
"On the first of January there was a gathering of native Christians of Allahabad, which would have done your heart good. They were from all the different churches--Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Methodists, Baptists. One of the Presbyterian missionaries invited them and provided refreshments. Large tents were pitched, and nearly a thousand were present. There were prayers, addresses, and hymns for two hours, then refreshments. It was a delightful occasion.
"Two weeks later we saw a gathering of a hundred thousand pilgrims. Hindoos came from all parts of India to bathe in the Ganges. Among them were several thousand Faquirs, hundreds of whom marched in public procession across the sands for a mile without one rag or shred of clothing, smeared with ashes only. That would have filled your heart with sadness. Last Sunday we spent in camp with one of our missionaries and his wife near a country town where we have a small Christian congregation.
"Around the camp fire at night we sang our hymns and offered our evening prayers, a beautiful and touching sight. The work is full of interest. My wife and I are well. She is much pleased with India. We are getting settled at our housekeeping. The Bible Society is doing a grand work. Would we had twice as many men."
