Judge's Nerve Saves Him
from Armed Insane Man

Detroit, Mich., March 2.--[Special.]--Wildly demanding "justice," Roy A. Wynkoop, 46 years old, a carpenter and former inmate of insane asylums, pulled two automatic pistols and covered Judge Fred S. Lamb of Cadillac, sitting in the Wayne Circuit court here, and August Blessing, Judge Lamb's clerk, today.
Judge Lamb had just refused to dissolve an injunction, and Wynkoop demanded that the Judge reverse himself. Blessing got out of the court room on a pretext to get the files in the case, and summoned deputy sheriffs and police reserves, who came to Judge Lamb's rescue with tear gas bombs.
One of these bombs, exploding, was believed to be a shot fired by Wynkoop at the Judge, and one of the officers shot Wynkoop, wounding him in the arm. It was then learned Wynkoop had not fired.
When Wynkoop came in, Judge Lamb and Blessing were alone in the court room. While Blessing was gone for help, Judge Lamb, covered by the two pistols, sat calmly on his bench, writing a letter.
"I have come for justice and I want you to sign this order," Wynkoop shouted.
"Well, it will be necessary to get that file," Blessing said. Asking the man his name, he marked it on a requisition card and walked from the court room to give the alarm. In the corridor he encountered three deputy sheriffs, who climbed through the window of another court room and made their way over a ledge to the window of Judge Lamb's court room. There they saw the man pointing his pistols at the judge.
Meanwhile the sheriff's office had been notified and Arthur H. Hitchens, chief clerk, with other deputies, rushed downstairs with pistols and tear gas bombs. Meanwhile, the police reserves also had been notified and arrived with tear gas bombs, which were thrown into the court room.
Wynkoop, it was learned, was acting as his own attorney in a suit to dissolve an injunction, which Judge Lamb refused to dissolve.
