Obituary: Charles Wynkoop.

On Monday, April 18, 1898, was laid away in Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, Mr. Charles Wynkoop of the town of Lockport, one of the oldest residents of the county. Mr. Wynkoop was born in Montgomery county, Pa., September 24, 1804, and died April 18, 1898, aged 93 years, 6 months, and 25 days. He came with his father's family to Niagara County in 1822 and at once settled amid what was then the forest, taking up his present location, felling the timber and clearing the entire tract of land now so fertile and valuable. He was married in March, 1825 to Sarah, daughter of John B. and Sarah Buchannan. To this union was given one child, a son, who died aged two months, in 1827, preceeded to the future by his mother, thus leaving Mr. Wynkoop a widower, which he remained for 71 years. Mr. Wynkoop was a hard-working farmer all his days. In his earlier life he often had to browse his oxen on the tender twigs of the young trees which he felled for that purpose. Over roads scarcely worthy of the name, he had to go as far as Lewiston or Niagara Falls to do his milling. He was a man of strict integrity and deep sympathy, well loved and trusted by all who knew him, and in his days of vigor one of the popular men of the neighborhood. He was a life-long Democrat in politics and cast his first Presidential vote for Andrew Jackson.
Of a family of 10 children, six sons and four daughters, he was the last.
His nearest relatives are four nephews, and three nieces, Daniel Wynkoop of Lockport, Daniel, John, Charles and Amanda Washburn of Ohio, Mrs. Edward Brooks and Mrs. Julia Van Cleve of Niagara County. February 20, 1893, Mr. Wynkoop, at his own request, received baptism and the holy communion at the hands of Rev. H. J. Watkins and was thus received into membership with the English Lutheran Church. Up to two weeks previous to his death he was able to be about the house, though he was feeble for two years past. Mrs. Van Cleve and her family were devoted in their care for this aged pilgrim and will deeply feel the absence of one always in their home and so closely identified with the interests and joys of all the household. The funeral services were held at the "Brick Church," Lutheran, Monday, April 18, at 2:30 p.m., when a crowded house of neighbors and friends showed the high esteem in which he was held. The text of Rev. Watkins was John 11:25. Very appropriate and well rendered selections were given by the choir of Raymond Hill church. Mr. Frank Weaver was undertaker while the bearers were Messrs. Samuel and Aaron Dysinger, George and Edward Behe, Jacob and Daniel Frantz.

I'd like to thank Anita Robinson Reid, [email protected], for sending me the link for Charles' obituary. Anita has been looking for this information for quite some time now and it's a pleasure to be able to add it to the website here, especially since it adds to my knowledge of the Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Wynkoops, my father's branch of the family.

Anita, thank you so very much. I want to wish you continued success in your ongoing quest regarding Charles' relatives and descendants.

    All my best,

    Chris
