FIRST MAIL RECEIVED.

Large Quantity of San Francisco Letters Reach Washington.

The first mail from San Francisco mailed after the earthquake was received in the local post-office early yesterday morning. The quantity was unusually large, and must have been mailed before the fire had made any great headway.
Another batch will be received to-morrow, but this will be small, owing to the light mail-box collections and demoralized condition of the post-office there.

CHEER ON BOX COVER.

Mrs. J. A. Wynkoop Hears that Daughter Is Safe in Tent.

Tidings on the cover of a shoe box from hungry loved ones in California were received yesterday by Mrs. J. A. Wynkoop, of 1511 Tenth street northwest. Robert M. Faulkner, of the Pension Office, and his wife and baby are safe in a tent, according to the message.
Mrs. Wynkoop is the mother of Mrs. Faulkner. Until yesterday no word had been heard, and the friends and relatives of the family had begun to fear that they were killed. The message on the shoe-box cover merely said they were safe and would write later.
The friends of Miss M. B. Matson heard from her yesterday from Berkeley, Cal.
Cassell Severance, son of F. C. Severance, of the Treasury Department, was heard from yesterday and is safe. Charles B. Gardner, brother of Harry Gardner, of 509 Ninth street northwest, has written that he and his family saved only their clothing. A. A. Sanders, father of Mrs. R. H. Haywood, of Washington, has been heard from at Palo Alto, having escaped from the San Francisco fire.
