CHEATS SENTENCE BY DEATH
_______

Chicago Dentist and Hotel Owner
Was Convicted of Bootlegging.

Special to The New York Times.

CHICAGO, April 27.--Dr. J. Newton Roe, formerly part owner of the New Southern Hotel, who was recently sentenced by Judge Landis to serve eighteen months in the Federal Penitentiary for bootlegging, died tonight at Lake View Hospital. Dr. Gilbert Wynkoop, attending physician and Roe's friend, declared that death had been due to a hemorrhage caused by cancer of the stomach.
Dr. Roe, formerly secretary to the President of the Valparaiso University and prominent in Chicago dental circles, was accused of storing more than $100,000 in liquor in the hotel of which he was a former owner. At the trial he contended that this was his "private stock."
