"FANS" DELIGHTED.

The Athletic baseball team of Phoenix, hitherto unbeaten, was defeated Sunday afternoon at Tucson by the Armstrong nine, the score standing 8 to 3. The game was a delight to the "fans," being almost devoid of errors and cleanly played throughout. Particularly noticeable was the absence of the debate that fiercely raged around the umpire on the occasion of the game in Phoenix the Sunday before, which was won by the local team from the Prescotts. The umpire at Tucson was Herman Wyncoop, formerly a Western League man, whose decisions "went." He will probably umpire the return game with Tucson, which is to be played in Phoenix next Sunday. Over one hundred "rooters" went to Tucson with the nine, and even more than that number of Tucson residents are expected here next Sunday.

Notes:

The "Herman Wyncoop" who umpired the game described above was Harmen H. Wynkoop, one of the sons of Col. Edward Wanshaer Wynkoop, and an avid baseball fan. Harman at one time had an apartment overlooking Wrigley Field in Chicago and had a large collection of baseballs in his possession, souvenirs of balls hit out of the park in his general neighborhood.
