OBITUARY.

Died May 28, 1860, in Gregory Diggings, Kansas Territory, Dr. Martin Dickinson Hickman, formerly of the State of Missouri and lately of Davenport, Iowa, aged 36(?) years.
Doctor Hickman emigrated to the Gold fields of the Rocky Mountains in July last, since which time he has been actively engaged in the practice of his profession, mining and general improvements. He was a member of the Christian church during the last ten years, and also, a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow fraternities. His walk and conversation has invariably corresponded with his profession, and he was loved and esteemed by all who knew him.
The cause of the Doctors death was a difficulty between himself and a miner in regard to a claim. He was endeavoring to defend his rights guarantied him by miners laws, and while so doing was mortally wounded by a shot fired by Henry Heckler, a German, who contested his right to the claim.                         C.
At a meeting of the Masonic Lodge, subsequently held at Mountain city, J. Casto, E. W. Wynkoop and J. H. Morton were appointed a committee to draft resolutions expressive of the feelings of the Lodge.
The committee reported the following, which were received and adopted:

WHEREAS, We have been called upon to assist in the administering the last rites to a departed Brother, therefore:

RESOLVED, That we sympathize sincerely with the family of the deceased in this their great affliction, and as Almighty God has seen fit in his infinite wisdom to call from our midst, suddenly and by a violent death a brother Mason, we bow in submission to his decree, but sorrowfully regret his departure.

                                                                E. W. WYNKOOP, } Committee.
