TROTH IS ANNOUNCED

Special to THE NEW YORK TIMES.

PHILADELPHIA, June 12.--Mrs. Scott Clark of Spring House, Wynnewood, has announced the engagement of her daughter, Miss Betty Clark, to John Wesley Cullen, son of Mrs. Edward E. Cullen Jr. of this city and the late Mr. Cullen.
Miss Clark, who was graduated from the Agnes Irwin School and made her Philadelphia debut during the season of 1935-36, is a granddaughter of Mrs. James Hutchison Scott and of the late Mr. Scott, Spanish-American War hero. Miss Clark is connected with the Thayer and Dixon families of this city and descended from the Dallas who founded Dallas, Texas. Her grandfather's parents were Thomas and Mathilda Dallas Scott of East Liberty, Pa.
Mr. Cullen was graduated from Haverford School. His great-uncle was James Barrett Cullen, Military Governor of Florida. Another ancestor of Mr. Cullen's was Elisha Cullen, a graduate of Princeton and a member of Congress in 1854. Through his mother Mr. Cullen is descended from Wyncoop Woodward, who was given a grant of land by William Penn which is now called Wyncote, a fashionable suburb of Philadelphia. Mrs. Cullen's father was a lawyer, Harmon Allison Noeckel, and her grandfather was Dr. Frederick Noeckle, well-known German surgeon.

Notes:

The above story about Wyncoop Woodward and the founding of Wyncote, Pennsylvania, is extremely interesting, if a bit short on facts, as most family traditions are.

Wynkoop Woodward, however, did exist. His full name was Garret Wynkoop Woodward, and he lived in Moreland Township, not far from Wynkoop Avenue in Huntingdon Valley, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was not born until well after the death of William Penn and could not have been given a grant of land by him. Wynkoop's mother was Margaret Wynkoop, the only child of Garret Wynkoop and Nancy or Ann Van Hoorn.

The present day town of Wyncote is a smallish, well-to-do community in Montgomery County, not far from Jenkintown, where my father grew up. I've been unable to find out much about its past or even when it was founded or who it was named after. I do know, however, that Wynkoop Woodward's father, George M. Woodward, was a real estate developer in the early to mid 1800s and may have had a hand in its creation. If you know anything more about Wyncote, its history and who it was named after, I would love to hear about it. Please feel free to drop me a line at [email protected].

Richard Wynkoop, in the 1904 edition of the Wynkoop Genealogy in the United States of America, has this to say about his grandfather, Garret Wynkoop, on page 68:

    163. Gerrit Wynkoop (Philip 48, Gerret 5, Cornelius 1), Philip "Winekoop" had a child baptized February 9, 1744, Abington, Pa., but no name recorded: it was this Gerrit.
Gerrit died in 1822, aged 78 years. He married, March 28, 1793, Nancy Van Horn, Abington church. She died, in 1837, aged 86 years. He was an executor of the will of his father, in 1771.
Child of Gerrit and Nancy Wynkoop:
400. Margaret: bp. Jan. 16, 1800, Abington church: m. George M. Woodward, of Burlington County, N. J., who died there, in 1850, aged 65. She was living in the same place, in 1868, and had six living children.

My own research into Wynkoop Woodward's family has resulted in this family tree:

Richard Wynkoop says that George and Margaret Wynkoop passed away in Burlington County, New Jersey, and I have followed his lead in my own family tree for them, although my own feeling is that they both passed away in Moreland Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

I will be updating this page as more information becomes available.

    All my best,

    Chris
