GIVE IN.

PLEAD GUILTY
IN LIQUOR CASE.

VIRGINIA HOTEL DIRECTORS
ACCEPT INEVITABLE.
______

Will Now Rely Upon Charter
Revision in Order to Make It
Possible to Get Table License--Starving
Girl Seeks Refuge in Camp of Graders.

LONG BEACH, July 11.--The directors of the Long Beach Hotel Company met today and decided that there is not much chance of winning in the liquor violation case now pending on a writ of habeas corpus. It was therefore agreed to enter a plea of guilty, pay the fine and close the case. They will then await the effort to amend the city charter to make it possible to have a table license.

BLONDE RESCUED.

Bessie Davis, a pretty 17-year-old blonde, was taken in charge today by Chief Williams and Police Matron Bixby and sent to the home of her mother in Tulare. She was rescued last evening from a grading camp by Mrs. Laura Clayton, who lives nearby. The girl's story is that she wanted to make her own way in the world and has been working in Oakland. A week ago she secured promise of a position in Long Beach, but when she arrived it was filled. She tramped the streets for two days seeking employment and then, faint with hunger, was attracted to the grading camp, by odors from the kitchen. She told her story, was fed and given a place to sleep. The men were rough but considerate, and offered her no indignity. But Mrs. Clayton saw her in the camp and fearing for her safety induced the girl to go to her home. Then she told the police. The girl was humbled and willing to go home, so Miss Bixby, from her own purse, purchased a ticket and sent her to Tulare.

GENIAL GEORGE.

George Stanlon of Los Angeles, came down from that city on the last car last night, went to the home of Mrs. Adelaide Christenson at Third and Cerritos avenue, kicked in the door and drove the woman and her five small children out into the night. Later he relented and allowed the children to return, but denied admittance to the woman. When the police arrived Stanlon was engaged on a quart of whisky, his face bleeding from cuts, and the five children lying asleep about the floor. This morning the woman refused to appear against him and Stanlon escaped with a fine of $5 for drunkenness.

DEMOCRATS REVIVE.

The few Democrats who live in Long Beach have revived under the magic of the nomination of Bryan and have organized a Democratic league and a Bryan club. The officers for the latter are: President, S. G. Long; secretary, E. F. Davis; treasurer, C. A. Miller. Only a preliminary organization of the league has been made, a committee of six being named to submit a plan for permanent organization. About twenty-six attended the preliminary after a week's persistent hustling.
One hundred and twenty-five members of the Southern California Credit Association arrived here at 4 o'clock and after an ocean trip to the breakwater, sat down to a banquet at Hotel Virginia. Addresses were made by Frank Tyrrell of Los Angeles and others.

FESTIVAL OF THE SEAS.

A Joint meeting of the Chambers of Commerce and Merchants' and Manufacturers' Association will be held Tuesday evening to discuss the project of a five-days' carnival to be called the "Festival of the Seas." One of the announced features will be the production of "H. M. S. Pinafore" on a ship anchored alongside the south end of the wharf, with a chorus of 100 voices.
Mrs. H. B. Wynkoop of St. Louis, who is here with her husband on their honeymoon, went bathing today and after dressing missed three costly gold combs which, aside from their intrinsic worth, were prized as the wedding gift of her husband. Search for the valuables has been futile.
