Gerardus Wynkoop, Esq.

Gerardus Wynkoop, Esq.

                                                                                OF BUCKS COUNTY.

This venerable citizen had attained to the advanced period of almost 80 years of life, when he descended to the "grave, in a full age, like as a shuck of corn cometh in his season." In the early periods of the memorable contest with Great Britain, he was zealously engaged in the toils of the tented field as a military officer, wherein he greatly distinguished himself in defence of American Liberty. At subsequent periods of the war he was for several years, under the old constitution, Speaker of the House of Assembly of Pennsylvania, then the sole Legislative body in the state, which laborious, honorable and highly responsible office, he discharged to the entire satisfaction of his constituents, whose interests he pursued with the most conscientious fidelity, during nineteen years service as their representative in that body. He was equally respected for the affection and prudence which he exercised in all the relative duties of domestic life; and was peculiarly beloved for the unwearied assiduity with which he continually ministered by his sympathy, property and counsels, to the distresses and calls of the widow and the orphan. Neither the pressure of important concerns in temporal affairs, nor the enjoyment of public favours and honours had the least tendency to make him ashamed of the gospel of Christ, which he adorned by a spotless life and conversation, and acknowledged by a public profession more than forty years in the communion of the Dutch reformed Church. While during a tedious sickness of five months, he did not cease to manifest a perfect resignation to the will of God, his desires were ardent for his release, to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. In fine his amiable character was so universally and justly appreciated, that it may be confidently asserted, he did not leave one worthy man his foe. He was on Monday the 29th June followed, to that "dark and narrow house appointed for all the living," by as numerous and respectable collection of afflicted relations, friends and fellow-citizens, as ever assembled in that county on a like occasion.     TRENTON FED.

I'd like to thank Tom Wilbur, [email protected], of Okemos, Michigan, for sending Gerardus's obituary to me. I don't know how I managed to miss this one, but it is the first time I've seen it. (Actually I do... I'm usually swamped with research, either ongoing, or completed but not yet posted. This one happens to be neither, which is what keeps me looking as hard as I can for the tons of undiscovered family history I have yet to find.)

At any rate, Tom, thanks so much, once again, for your inestimable help. You know how much it means to me.

If you have a family clipping that you haven't found on the website here, and you'd like to share, I'd love to hear from you. You can contact me at [email protected]. I always have time to listen to another family story.

    All my best,

    Chris
