Suicide.--The suicide epidemic has been raging for some time past to an alarming extent in our city, and has carried off many victims during the past few months--or, rather, they have taken themselves off. Men and women still destroy themselves despite the "canon 'gainst self-slaughter," and for various causes. Some have left this sphere in a state of desperation and disgust, some from misfortune, some for love, and some because they were rendered mad by the use of strong drink. One cuts his throat, another tries a private execution with the rope, another patronizes the razor, another the pistol, and not a few the dark, silent, flowing water. As yet, we believe, the poor creatures have not been heard from, or if they have, none of the spiritual mediums have apprized us of how they find themselves by this time. [More...]
