THE CITY.

Suicide.--The suicide epidemic has been raging for some time past to an alarming extent in our city, and has carried off many victims during the past few months--or, rather, they have taken themselves off. Men and women still destroy themselves despite the "canon 'gainst self-slaughter," and for various causes. Some have left this sphere in a state of desperation and disgust, some from misfortune, some for love, and some because they were rendered mad by the use of strong drink. One cuts his throat, another tries a private execution with the rope, another patronizes the razor, another the pistol, and not a few the dark, silent, flowing water. As yet, we believe, the poor creatures have not been heard from, or if they have, none of the spiritual mediums have apprized us of how they find themselves by this time.
Accidents.--On Monday evening, while a portion of the firemen who had participated in the dedicatory parade were passing Thirteenth and Lombard streets, a horse attached to a light carriage became frightened by the music, and starting to run, threw Mr. Thomas J. Harrison, who was driving, and another gentleman, violently to the street, inflicting upon Mr. Harrison a severe but not dangerous scalp wound, and somewhat injuring his companion. The horse then ran up Lombard street, knocking down a lad named John Burt, who resides with his parents, in Rittenhouse street, and fracturing his skull. The sufferers were taken to Wynkoop's drug store and their wounds dressed, after which they were removed to their homes. Mr. Harrison resides at the corner of Dean and Spruce Streets.
