WOMAN HELD IN RUM CASE
___________

Prohibition Agent Believes Corneros Involved in
Landing of Liquor Supply

___________

Mrs. Catherine Martell, said by Chief Prohibition Agent John H. Wynkoop, to be the sister of Tony and Frank Cornero, was arraigned yesterday before United States Commissioner Head on charges of possessing 115 cases of liquor and twenty-five cases of wine that were seized Friday at her home 2403 Wellington Road. Mrs. Martell denied she was related to the Cornero brothers.
She was taken into custody along with William Silverman, alias Fred Williams, and C. E. Edate Edwards, former member of the Los Angeles Police Department booze squad at the Wellington Road residence.
"We believe that the liquor seized was a shipment that was landed from a speedboat off Balboa and was not intended to have been landed at that time," Wynkoop said yesterday. "Tony Cornero is in London at the present time, but Frank Cornero is in the city and we are conducting an investigation to determine if he had anything to do with bringing the cargo into Los Angeles."
Tony and Frank Cornero have been investigated innumerable times as the heads of one of the most gigantic rum-running rings now operating in the United States.
The complaint filed against Mrs. Martell by Wynkoop accused her as Jane Doe Cornero and listed the charge as possession of liquor. Silverman and Edwards also were charged with possession. After arraignment before Commissioner Head they were released on $1000 bond each and their examination was set for Wednesday.
