THE INDIAN WAR.
______
By a gentleman from Fort Lyon, we learn that Major Wynkoop left that post on Wednesday last, the 14th, with one hundred and fifty men upon an expedition to the Big Timbers on the Republican river. He had information that fifteen hundred lodges of hostile Indians were encamped in that neighborhood of whom he went in search. He expected to be joined by Captain Tyler's company which would give him a strength of two hundred and fifty men. We fully expect to hear of warm work in that direction soon.
A party of fifteen Indians are reported to have chased a herdsman into Colorado City on Thursday last. The story may be true but it seems a little improbable when soldiers are stationed so near there. We half suspect it was like some of our Indian scares in this neighborhood.
LATER.--Since writing the above, we have learned from Mr. Miller, of Colorado City, that there is no doubt about Indians being lurking in the vicinity of that place. They have been seen at different times, in various places, and by a considerable number of persons. Co. A. will probably find something to do before long.
