The Observance of the Appointed Day
Here.

    The observance of to-day, is one of humiliation and mourning for the late President, [President James Garfield-chw], in accordance with the proclamation of President Arthur and the announcement of the District Commissioners. In the Episcopal churches the burial service, omitting the commital to the grave, will be read at 2 o'clock. In the Catholic churches requiem masses will be said at 9 o'clock in the morning. All the altars were draped yesterday, and many churches displayed portraits of the dead President.
    The services at Holy Cross Episcopal church will commence at 7:30 A. M., when the communion will be administered. At 2 o'clock P. M. the office for the dead will be said and a short address delivered by the pastor on "The Lesson of the Life and Death of the Late President."
    The West-street Presbyterian church, Georgetown, will be open for prayer at 11 o'clock.
    Waugh M. E. church will have a prayer service between 11 and 12 o'clock.
    The North Presbyterian and the North Baptist churches and their pastors will unite with the Memorial church in services at 2 o'clock.
    The congregations of the Assembly Presbyterian church, Rev. George O. Little, and of the Central Presbyterian church, Rev. Dr. A. W. Pitzer, will hold united services at 2 P. M. at the former church, Fifth and I-streets, consisting of prayers, music and addresses by the two pastors. One reason for the joint service is that the former church belongs to the Northern and the latter the Southern branch of the church.
    Rev. Dr. Rankin will hold services to-day in the First Congregational church, Tenth and G, at 2 P. M., to consist of music, prayers, addresses by the pastor and members of the congregation, but no sermon.
    The services at Trinity Protestant Episcopal church, corner of Third and C streets, will be at 2 o'clock. The rector, Rev. Thomas G. Addison, will deliver a funeral sermon.
    The joint congregations of Union Methodist Episcopal and Western Presbyterian churches will be held at 11 o'clock in the latter place for worship, on H street, between Nineteenth and Twentieth streets, Rev. T. S. Wyncoop, minister, and in the afternoon at 3 o'clock, in Union chapel, Twentieth street, near Pennsylvania avenue, Rev. J. C. Hagey, pastor.
    At Mt. Vernon Methodist Episcopal Church South, services will be held by Rev. David Wills. His subject will be "Thoughts Suggested by the First Proclamation of the New President."
    Services will be held at the Asbury Methodist Episcopal church, Eleventh and K streets, at 4 P. M., by Rev. N. M. Carroll, pastor.
    The special services at the Hamline Methodist Episcopal church, Ninth and P streets, Rev. S. M. Hartsock, will be held at 11 A. M. A service of prayer will be held at 2 P. M. in the Metropolitan Presbyterian church, corner B and Fourth street east, Rev. Dr. Chester, pastor.
    Services at the Vermont-avenue Christian church, will be held at 11 o'clock.
    Special service at 2 P. M. will be held at the Church of the Epiphany, Rev. Dr. Paret, rector, G, near Thirteenth.
