The Cornelis Evertsz. Wijnkoop
Timeline.

by
Christopher H. Wynkoop.

Cornelis Evertsz. Wijnkoop, (approximately 1627-1676), was the first Wynkoop family member known to have permanently settled in New Netherland. It is from him that most of the present day Wynkoop family in America is descended. Early on an employee of the Patroon, Jan van Rensselaer, he left a fair number of official records behind, although much of his very early life in the colonies is still pretty shadowy and even less is known about his life in the Netherlands before his voyage to New Netherland in 1651. Research, however, is still ongoing and any new information uncovered regarding him will be posted here when it becomes available.

It is largely due to the tireless efforts of men like Arnold J. F. Van Laer, Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan, Joel Munsell, Randall Roswell Hoes and Dr. Charles Gehring, that we have a pretty clear picture of Cornelis Wijnkoop's activities in New Netherland from about 1655 on, until his death in 1676. The early Dutch were a pretty litigious bunch and Cornelis seems to have been no exception to the rule, (fortunately for us!)

Incidently, Cornelius spelled his last name almost consistently, with a k, [Wijnkoop], unlike the earlier Pieter, who spelled his last name consistently with a c, [Wijncoop]. Both men seem to have been well educated for the times, so I believe the difference in the spelling of their last names may be of some significance.

In the meantime, enjoy this visit to the past with this distant grandsire of ours.
