Charles Wynkoop, Niagara County, New York.
Charles Wynkoop,
Niagara County, New York.

Wynkoop, Charles, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, September 24, 1804, and came to Niagara County with his father, Abram Wynkoop, 1822. Starting in the middle of the woods they cleared up the land, having to go to mill at Lewiston and Niagara Falls. In 1825 he married Sarah, daughter of John and Margaret Buchanan. Mr. Wynkoop has always been a farmer and has done as much, or more, to clear up the Town of Lockport as any other one man. Of strict integrity, he has ever advanced the best interests of his town and townspeople and has ever aided any enterprise intended to benefit his fellowmen, and at the close of life of over 93 years, receives the respect of all his associates. Mr. Wynkoop is a member of the Lutheran Church and a lifelong Democrat casting his first presidential vote for Andrew Jackson.

Notes & Acknowledgement:

This brief biography of Charles Wynkoop was sent to me by my good friend, Sharon Poole Sherrick, [email protected], of Chicago, who has been researching Abraham Wynkoop's family, and more specifically, his descendants for some time now. Abraham (Abram) Wynkoop's wife was Ruth Hayes, (misreported as "Hayr" in the 1904 Wynkoop Genealogy.)

Charles also comes in for a mention on page 151 of the Niagara County Pioneer Association's Souvenir History of Niagara County:

"Charles Wynkoop came from Pennsylvania with his father's family in 1822 and resided ever afterwards in the Town of Lockport. He died in 1898 in the 94th year of his age."

Richard Wynkoop, in the 1904 edition of the Wynkoop Genealogy in the United States of America, has this to say about his family on page 97:

    366. Abraham Wynkoop, (John 144, Cornelius 44, Gerret 5, Cornelius 1,) born April 7, 1765, baptized May 26, Abington church, Penn.: died March 23, 1841: married Ruth Hayr. They removed to the neighborhood of Lockport, N. Y. The children lived there, except Jane.
Children of Abraham and Ruth Wynkoop:
640. Charles: m. Sarah Anne Buchanan.
641. Jane: lived in Ohio.
642. Julia.
643. Daniel.
644. Joel.

Sharon wrote, "The listing of the children of #366 does not include my ancestor Lydia b. 1800. There is no doubt of her parentage, as it is well documented from Niagara County N. Y. records, where the family lived, including Abraham's Will, which makes reference to his deceased daughter, Lydia Loucks, and her surviving child, Julia Ann Loucks."

"Lydia Wynkoop Loucks, married to Jacob Loucks, predeceased her father (#366). Lydia died in May of 1836, after the birth of her daughter, Julia Ann, born the previous January. Lydia had only one prior child, Andrew, who lived only a few months."

"This Charles Wynkoop, son of Abram, is listed as the source of the information on Abram's family in Richard Wynkoop's book. Ironically, either Charles did not mention his dead sister, Lydia, (my ancestor), or Richard left her out. What makes it strange is that Charles raised his niece, Julia Ann Loucks, daughter of Lydia, after Lydia died as the result of giving birth to Julia. Charles made Julia and her children the heirs in his Will."

"Anita Reid Robinson, [email protected], and I, in our pursuit of Abraham's descendants in Niagara County N. Y., have discovered there was possibly a stop-off in Seneca County, near Ovid, before the final settlement near Lockport in Niagara County. I am working on that now.

Currently, Sharon is trying to find the parents of Abram Wynkoop's wife, Ruth Hayes, and her sister, Jane.

Additionally, they are both looking for more information on Joel Wynkoop, #644, son of Abram, husband of Sarah Blosser and Anita's Great-Great-Grandfather.

Sarah's obituary, from 1898, states that her husband predeceased her by 10 years. Joel and Sarah lived in the Town of Lockport, N. Y., and the Townhall clerks have spent many hours trying to find his obit, without success.

If you can help either Sharon or Anita in their quest for more information on the Hayes or Wynkoop families, they would love to hear from you. You can reach them at either of their respective email addresses, listed above.

    All my best,

    Chris
