Wynkoop Family Coat of Arms.
Wynkoop Family Coat of Arms.

There are at least two different Coats of Arms attributed to the Wynkoop family and a third which may or may not be a Coat of Arms at all.

One of these may belong to the Wijnkoops of Hoorn, although this has not been definitively established yet. The other, almost certainly, belongs to the Wijnkoops or van Winkoops of Gelderland. The third belongs to Benjamin Wynkoop of New York City and made it's first appearance on his personal tankard in about 1714. This may actually be a very special kind of coat of arms known as a rebus or a pictorial representation of a specific name.

These first three articles, written by William J. Hoffman, M. E. appeared in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society in New York City and are reprinted here with the kind permission of the editor, Harry Macy.
