Col. Wynkoop's Speech at
the Cooper Institute.

Cooper Union, New York City.

The Cooper Institute, aka Cooper Union in the late 1800s.

Col. Edward Wanshaer Wynkoop, after his resignation as Indian Agent for the Arapahoes, Cheyenes, Camanches, and Apaches, was invited by Peter Cooper, the founder of the prestigious Cooper Institute in New York City to air his feelings about the situation between the Indians in the West and the Federal Government and to suggest ways to cure the problems that were occuring on a daily basis.

Peter Cooper.

Ned delivered his speech on December 23, 1868 in front of a large crowd, including reporters from a number of the nation's largest newspapers. For unknown reasons, none of them chose to report all of Col. Wynkoop's remarks. However, two of the papers, the New York Times and the New-York Daily Tribune, each chose to report on the sections of Ned's speech that the other chose to ignore. So, by reading both of those reports, you should get a pretty good idea of what Ned Wynkoop had to say that evening and even, perhaps, why this speech of his caused him such political headaches over the years and kept him from finding another government job for another eight or nine years.
