EDWARD JUDSON WYNKOOP, M. D.

Dr. Edward Judson Wynkoop, engaged in the practice of medicine in Syracuse with office at No. 210 James street and residence at No. 510 James street, was born in Syracuse in 1869, his parents being Jonathan G. and Mary Judson (Hawley) Wynkoop, the former of Ghent, Columbia county, New York, and the latter of Coxsackie, Greene county, New York. The father was of Holland ancestry and a son of Rev. Peter S. Wynkoop, a Dutch Reformed clergyman, who was born in Kinderhook, New York, in 1788 and died in 1848. His wife bore the maiden name of Margaret Gosman and passed away in Ghent, New York, about 1832.
Jonathan G. Wynkoop was born in Ghent, Columbia county, May 13, 1824, and was one of five sons and seven daughters, of whom four sons became prominent booksellers, one in Hudson, another in Kingston, New York, and two in Syracuse. He attended Kinderhook Academy, and afterward joined his brothers in the book business in Hudson from 1841 to 1845. He then came to Syracuse, and with Rev. Joseph Myers opened a book store in the Syracuse House block. In 1848 he was joined by his brother, Robert G. and leaving the store just mentioned, the two opened a similar establishment where Brown & Dawson now are, whence it was removed four years later to the store just south. The brothers continued in partnership until 1870, when Jonathan G. withdrew, leaving Robert G. to carry on the store for a time. In 1873 Jonathan G. Wynkoop joined the firm of Judson, Williams & Company in a large lumber business, having mills at Constantia and elsewhere. He was interested in the lumber trade, and since 1878 to the time of his death in 1906, was director and the secretary and treasurer of the Salt Springs Solar Coarse Salt Company. He has also been interested in various other enterprises, and was one of the founders of the Dutch Reformed church on James street. In 1856 he married Miss May Judson Hawley, and they have three children: Miss Emma Judson W. Fritts, wife of a physician in Hudson, New York, born January 14, 1858; William A., born March 5, 1863; and Dr. Edward Judson Wynkoop, born April 25, 1869.
In public and private schools of Syracuse Dr. Wynkoop pursued his literary education and as a preparation for the responsible duties of a professional career he attended the medical college of Syracuse University, which conferrred upon him his M. D. Degree in 1892. He afterward pursued post-graduate work in the New York Post-Graduate Hospital and served as interne

in that institution until 1894, spending two years there. He afterward returned to Syracuse, where he has since remained in the general practice of his profession and is also associate professor of diseases of children in the Syracuse Medical College. He has made a specialty of that department of practice and orthopaedic surgery. He is also attending physician for diseases of chilldren at the Women's & Children's Hospital of Syracuse and for children's diseases at the Free Dispensary. That he keeps in touch with the profession in its advancement, experimentation and experience is indicated through his membership with the Onondaga Medical Society, the Syracuse Academy of Medicine, the Central New York Medical Association, the New York State Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the New York Post-Graduate Alumni Association.
Dr. Wynkoop is not unknown in other organizations, being connected with the Psi Upsilon and the A. M. P. O., a medical fraternity. He likewise belongs to the Central City Lodge of Masons and has had some military experience, having enlisted in 1894 as a private in the New York National Guard. He served for eight years and later was surgeon of the Forty-first Separate Company. In politics he is an independent republican.
On the 15th of June, 1898, Dr. Wynkoop was married to Miss Florence Niver, a daughter of W. K. Niver, of Syracuse. They have three children: William Niver, born March 30, 1899; Helen Judson, born October 5, 1901; and Florence, December 6, 1904. A hint of his ancestral history is given in the fact that Dr. Wynkoop is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and also of the Holland Society of New York. He is a gentleman of liberal culture and scholarly attainments, whose life record stands in contra-distinction to the old adage that a prophet is not without honor save in his own country, for in the city of his nativity he has so directed his labors as to gain recognition as one of the able and progressive practitioners of medicine.
