WYNKOOP GENEALOGYIN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Compiled for 35 years by Gertrude Wynkoop Strom Averill of Hill City, Minnesota FOURTH EDITION December 1, 1980 PREFACE The material used in the compiling of this Genealogy has been collected by the compiler #93, Gertrude Wynkoop Strom Averill of Hill City, Minnesota. She is the daughter of #24, Arthur Leonard Wynkoop and Darling Ethel McPheeters. Gertrude Wynkoop Strom Averill, #93 grew up in Hill City, Minnesota, Always interested in Family and relatives, at some point in her life she began garnering bits and pieces of family history; births, deaths, weddings, etc. For many years her family went to Indiana to the annual family reunion. Gertrude listened and absorbed. As an adult, married and the mother of three girls, she worked first in the family filling station, later for the Forestry Service. Gertrude began to accumulate the information in written form, Newspaper clippings, letters, answers to questions, for thirty five years the searching went on. The First Edition of the Wynkoop Genealogy Hallenbeck was thirty four pages. The Second Edition of Wynkoop Genealogy in the United States of America and also a table of Dutch given names and surnames published by Wynkoop and Hallenbeck in 1878, was 130 pages. The Third Edition of Wynkoop Genealogy in the United States of America printed by Knickerbocker Press in 1904 was 214 pages. These can be found in the New England Genealogy Society at Boston, Massachusetts and in the Jefferson Thomas reading room at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. In 1914, D. W. Wynkoop, M.D., a historian of Wynkoop Genealogy had printed a form and sent it out, it is believed, to many descendents of the Wynkoop line; one of these was sent to Arthur Wynkoop, of what date I am not sure. It was never returned and, it is believed that nothing ever came of D. W. Wynkoop's endeavors. I am making a copy and sending it with this Document as I believe it has a certain amount of Historic value. The Third Edition was borrowed in book form with photographs by Gertrude Wynkoop Strom Averill. This was copied type written, less photographs and donated in 1978 by the Laurel Wynkoop family, it was 180 pages long. Many copies have been donated by them. Helen and Lyle Wynkoop have also spent many hours of going over notes, dates etc., correcting and recorrecting the many, many pieces of information that Gertrude Averill had collected over the past 35 years for the Fourth Edition. Their daughter, M.J. Wynkoop has finally typed, retyped and collated the information in the form that [it] is in now. I am sure that there are going to be mistakes and emissions,[sic] for this I am sorry. But, it was not due to lack of effort I assure you. I also would like to thank all of the many people that have sent in information and have given their time. I hope that this helps to preserve our heritage. I would like to continue from here with even more details than are present in this Edition if that is possible, which it is, only if you endeavor to help me with this preservation of our history and the Wynkoop heritage. Any history that can be remembered about your forefathers and any photographs, preferably a 5x7 of which I will make a copy and send back. It is my belief that we have to start again at this point in order to make another start and another end for our Future Generations. Sincerely,
Lyle E. Wynkoop [Handwritten note at the top of the following circular:]

WYNKOOP FAMILY
Greetings:--
This Fourth Edition of the Wynkoop Genealogy will contain besides its family history brought up to the year 1914, many illustrations reproduced from photographs and drawings of our family homesteads. It is requested that all will take the trouble where possible of having a photograph made or even a sketch by hand of the family homestead no matter how humble. --one full front face the eyes looking into the lens of the camera and another straight profile. The length of each face in picture should be an inch and a half from chin to top of head. Any of the Wynkoop men over forty years of age who will take this trouble will greatly oblige.
Each edition of the Wynkoop Genealogy bas been published at a financial loss to its Editor. The Fourth Edition will undoubtedly meet the same fate. The small circulation of such a book necessitates the price which must be charged for each copy--$5.00. There will be a few deluxe editions printed, at a cost of $25.00 each. It is important that the Editor should have some gauge of the number of copies he is to have printed. To this end I request you to signify your intention of purchasing or not. The book will be sent on receipt of purchase price or C. O. D. when published. Whether you purchase or not kindly fill in the enclosed blank of information for this is of more importance than the sale of the work.

James W. Wynkoop, one of the oldest living residents of Boone County, Ind., springs from sterling German ancestry, and traces his genealogy to the early history of Pennsylvania, in which state his paternal grandfather was born and reared. His father, Isaac Wynkoop, also a native of the above state, where he married Ann Winder, became a resident of Indiana at the age of thirty years, locating first in Union County, and later in the county of Boone, which at that time was an almost unbroken wilderness. He was by occupation a farmer, in which useful calling he took a front rank, and did much, in a quiet way, for the material and moral advancement of the community which he assisted in founding. He was progressive and enterprising, a leading member of the Presbyterian Church, and he enjoyed the acquaintance of a large circle of friends throughout the county of Boone. James W. Wynkoop was born in Franklin County, Ind., January 23, 1821, and was seventeen years of age when he accompanied his father to Boone County, of which he has since been an honored resident. In the pioneer school-house of the olden time, with its stick chimney, puncheon floor and greased paper windows, he acquired a limited education, and in the clearing of the fields learned the lessons of industry which afterward enabled him to succeed in life and become the possessor of a comfortable portion of worldly wealth. He recalls with pleasure the stirring scenes of long ago, when the deep forests abounded in wild game of all kinds, which served as the chief means of subsistence for the early settlers, and when the nearest neighbor lived several miles distant from his home. From a primitive condition he has witnessed the many changes through which Boone County has passed to its present advanced stage of civilization, and frequently goes back in memory to the period when he assisted the neighbors in log rolling for thirty days in succession. He married in April 1845, Amanda J. Gleaner, daughter of Benjamin and Elsie (Shepherd) Gleaner, and immediately thereafter settled on a farm not far from the County Seat. Later he purchased his present place in Harrison Township, which at that time was but little improved--only a very small area being in cultivation. He states that when he moved to his new home in the forest the brush grew to the very door of his dwelling, and the outlook was anything but encouraging. Possessed of a strong physical frame, he at once began felling the forest, and with the assistance of his good wife, who worked with him early and late, succeeded in due season in bringing a number of acres under a state of cultivation. He has always been a very industrious man and spent the prime of his life in improving his place, which is now one of the best farms in Harrison Township. He has reached the good old age of seventy-three years, is well preserved physically and mentally, but is now practically retired from the active duties of the farm; his wife is hale and hearty at sixty-six years of age, and it is a compliment justly bestowed in saying that she is one of the most highly respected and kind-hearted women of her neighborhood. Their children are as follows: Levi L., Julia A., Isaac, Rebecca, Perry, Henry G., David, Mary E., and Ora. Of the above, Isaac, Mary E., Julia A. and Perry are dead; the others are all living and doing well for themselves. The parents of Mrs. Wynkoop were early settlers of Boone County and highly respectable people. Her grandfather, William Shepard, was a patriot of the Revolution, in which struggle he served eight years and eight months, and took part in a number of leading battles under General Washington.

I'd like to thank Dawn Roberts, [email protected], of Greencastle, Indiana for sending me a copy of Gertrude's Wynkoop Genealogy. You could have blown me over with a feather when she told me about it. This study was completely unknown to me when she emailed me in March of 2004. It's enabled me to solve a number of outstanding Indiana family mysteries for friends of mine and others who've stopped by the website before and taken the time to drop me a line. Dawn, Thank you so very, very much. This is too valuable a family history to have remained hidden away for as long as it has been. I'm so glad that you wrote and mentioned it to me. Thank you too for the enormous amount of time you spent proofreading and correcting the online version of Gertrude's Genealogy. Having done this myself, more times than I care to count, I truly appreciate your time and effort. In addition I would like to express my thanks to Dawn's grandmother, Roslyn Wynkoop, whose own research makes up the final two pages of this special family Genealogy and who generously helped me with the final cleanup and corrections necessary to make this history as valuable as it it. Roslyn, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I would also like to thank Helen Averill, of Hill City, Minnesota, Gertrude's step-daughter. She contacted Gertrude's more immediate family around Hill City for me and forwarded my letter to Gertrude's sister, Mrs. Charlotte Kivela, who is also interested in genealogy. Helen wrote me that, "Gertrude's family here in Minnesota gives permission for you to enter her materials on your website, if you need that permission. Gert would have been overjoyed to see it on computer. She spent a lot of time researching the Wynkoop side as well as other sides. Best of luck and happy sleuthing, Sincerely, Helen Averill." Helen, on behalf of Wynkoops everywhere, my gratitude knows no bounds. Your family's generosity is inspiring, and I hope that I've managed to live up to Gertrude's desires, in terms of the presentation of all of her hard work. Through it her love of family will continue to shine for years to come. All my best, Chris
