Wynkoop Homesteads
and Other Places:

There are a surprising number of old Wynkoop Homesteads still in existence even today as well as a number of places around the United States named after family members. The most famous of course is the original family homestead in Hurley outside of Kingston, New York. This home was featured in the movie "Tootsie", (Columbia Pictures, 1982), starring Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange and Charles Durning. Charles Durning's home in upstate New York, about 1 hour into the film, is actually Cornelius Wynkoop's homestead. It appears onscreen for about 20 seconds or so. Some of the interior bedroom scenes were shot there too.
There are others, however, notably Judge Henry Wynkoop's home Vredensberg in Pennsylvania, the Wynkoop-Van Schaack house in Kinderhook, New York and the Van Deusen house in Hurley, New York. Once the home of Cornelia Wynkoop [59] around 1741, it has a secret room and even a resident ghost!
In addition to this however there are a wide variety of creeks, streams, reservoirs, streets, avenues and even villages named after family members. I'll be posting background information on each of these places right here as it becomes available .
You can do your part too. If you know of any places named after the Wynkoops, drop me a line at [email protected]. I'd love to know more about them and why they're named as they are. I'll bet there are some pretty interesting stories out there.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
