Obituary.
Colonel John Estil Wynkoop died Thursday afternoon at his residence, 5058 Wynnefield avenue, West Philadelphia, from pneumonia, after an illness of five days. He was one of five brothers, all of whom served as colonels in the militia of the United States. Colonel Wynkoop was born in Newtown, Bucks county, May 9, 1825. At the breaking out of the Rebellion he entered the three months' service as captain of a company in the Sixth Pennsylvania Regiment, recruited in Schuylkill county. He was soon promoted to major of Young's Kentucky Regiment of Light Cavalry and eventually became senior major of the Seventh Pennsylvania Cavalry, and commanded that regiment. At the expiration of the three months' service he organized the Twentieth Pennsylvania Cavalry and enlisted in the six months' service. When mustered out he reorganized the Twentieth Regiment Pennsylvania Cavalry, for the three years' term, and while colonel of this regiment he commanded a brigade at Cumberland, Md. Colonel Wynkoop also served as General Couch's chief of staff in the southwest. He was a charter member of the Schuylkill County Lodge of Masons. After he left the army he reentered active business, principally in coal and iron.
