Jan Jansen Van Langedyck Timeline:

by
Christopher H. Wynkoop.

While there is not a lot known about Jan Jansen Van Langedyck, it is known that he and his family arrived in New Amsterdam, (Manhattan), either in late 1648 or early 1649, since he leased some cattle on September 6, 1649. The cattle indicate that he probably leased a farm on Manhattan to house and support his young family. Unfortunately, due to the disastrous 1911 Library fire in Albany, we'll probably never know for sure. According to Charles Gehring, (on page xi of the Council Minutes, 1652-1654), "There ... exist considerable gaps in the later records, one of which is between August of 1649 and January of 1652. Thus over two years of council minutes are missing . . . No mention is made of these records in the 1820 inventory, indicating that they have been lost for at least 163 years."

This is devastating news for both Van Langedyck and Wynkoop family researchers since the lost records concern the earliest appearances of the Van Langedyck family and Cornelis Wijnkoop in New Amsterdam and New Netherland. Lord knows what history we've lost.

It appears, (barring a miracle of some sort), that we must be satisfied with what we do have, so enjoy this abbreviated visit to the past with one of our distant great-grandfathers.
