"Mrs. Nora Allison, leader in UDC, 84, a resident of Fairfax County for 55 years and an active member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, died Monday in Doctors' Hospital. A native of Loudoun County, she was the widow of James R. Allison who served 30 years as Sheriff of Fairfax County. He died in 1927.

Mrs. Allison, the daughter of the late Albert W. and Sarah S. (Nancy Stone) Wynkoop, was president of the Fairfax Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy for more than 20 years. At the time of her death she was honorary president of the chapter.

During her early residence in Fairfax County, Mrs. Allison taught school in the small community of Navy. A lifelong Methodist, she attended the Fairfax Methodist Church."

"Memorial - Brother John Wynkoop, one of the oldest and most beloved members of the Round Hill Methodist Church, died in the Lord Dec. 9, 1914, in the 83rd year of his age . . .

"There was a large family connection of the Wynkoops. He was one of a large family of children, all of whom preceded him to the grave except three, Mr. Thomas Wynkoop of near Paxson, Va., Mrs. Samuel Wynkoop of Bluemont, Va. and Mrs. James Boyd, widow of the late Rev. James Boyd of Roanoke, Va.

"He had a family of nine children, all of whom, with his wife, survive him, this being the first break in a family of eleven.

"The funeral took place from his late residence on Dec. 11 and was in charge of his pastor, Rev. Frank Ridgeway, after which the body was taken to Hamilton, Va. and laid away in the family lot at that place." (Lakeview Cemetery, Hamilton)

  

Excerpts from Obituary of Mrs. Ruth Hannah Wynkoop - "Peacefully passes away at her home near Round Hill. Mrs. Ruth Hannah Wynkoop, widow of John W. Wynkoop, died at her home, about two miles southwest of Round Hill on Sunday last, aged 69 years.

"Mrs. Wynkoop was a native of this county being a daughter of the late Garrett Wynkoop of Woodburn, and leaves many friends and acquaintances in this section. She had for many years been a devoted member of the Methodist Church and died happy in that faith.

"She is survived by three sons and six daughters, Messrs. William, Frank and Heaton Wynkoop, Mrs. Jesse Seaton, Mrs. Frank Kerrick, Mrs. John Chappelle and Misses Ada, Fannie and Ruth Wynkoop, at home.

"Her funeral took place from her late home on Tuesday, Rev. Mr. McIntyre officiating. The burial was in Lakeview Cemetery in this town.

  

From another account - ". . . her remains were interred in Hamilton Cemetery by the side of her husband, John Wynkoop, who preceded her to the great beyond three years ago.

Obituary: Mrs. Hester Sibert Wynkoop, wife of Heaton Wynkoop of Leesburg, Va., died at the Loudoun Hospital Friday. She had been in declining health for six months. She was 43 years of age and a daughter of Mr. N. H. Sibert of Ashburn and the late Mrs. Mary Keller Sibert. Mrs. Wynkoop was born and raised in Shenandoah Co., Va., and married sixteen years ago. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband (Rufus Heaton), her father, one sister, Mrs. John Anderson, Berryville, Va., and two brothers, Messrs. John Sibert, Tom's Brook, Shenandoah Co., Va., and Roy Sibert of Florida.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 o'clock, Rev. W. M. Campton and

Rev. O. L. Gochenour officiating. Interment was made in Lakeview Cemetery, Hamilton.

Obituary: Rufus Heaton Wynkoop - Aug. 15, 1962, son of John and Ruth Hannah Wynkoop. Funeral services were held Aug. 19 at the United Brethren Church, Mt. Hebron in Strasburg. Mr. Wynkoop died at his home after a long illness. He was born Feb. 22, 1888 near Round Hill to the late John William and Ruth Hannah Wynkoop.

Surviving him are his wife, Vallerie, three daughters, Mrs. Elga Wymer, Mrs. Janice Elliott, both of Strasburg and Mrs. Ruth Coleman of Lynchburg and two sons, Zene and Buddy, both of Strasburg. Also surviving are five grandchildren. Mr. Wynkoop leaves one brother, William Wynkoop of Leesburg and four sisters, Misses Fannie and Ruth Wynkoop of Round Hill, Mrs. Mary Kerrick of Bluemont and Mrs. Mitylene Chappelle of Purcellville.

The Rev. Gordon C. Bayles Jr. and the Rev. Robert Dunn were the officiating ministers. Interment was at Mt. Hebron Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Howard Sager, Robert Neff, Perry Elliott, William Keller, William Baker and Marvin Coffman. Honorary pallbearers were Carl Devers, Douglas Riffey Jr., Robert Hammon, Richard Orndorff, John W. Sibert and John Richard.

The universal heart of the community, in the vicinity of Berryville, Clarke Co., Va., has been greatly touched by the deep affliction of the family of Mr. George & Susan A. Wynkoop - formerly of Loudoun Co., Va., but recently purchased property in Clarke, where they now reside. The family, consisting of the parents and ten healthy children, was attacked by diphtheria of the most malignant type, a few weeks since. Excepting the father and eldest son, all became victims of the dreadful disease and within eight days four of the children had been gathered to their Father's house on high, and their bodies laid beneath the sod of a shaded vale near the house of the family, there to await the resurrection.

"The first to go was 'Darling little Nellie', the youngest and pet of the household. The Pet not simply because she was the baby, but also on account of her sweet joyous disposition. The next was Clifton, a happy prattling three-year old giving amusement and joy to the household by his innocent, sprightly childish expression and sport. Jimmy was the

next to yield to the ravages of the pitiless disease; he was an unusually bright, happy and intelligent young man; during his illness he embraced the Savior, from which time on to his death he was rejoicing in a full assurance of his salvation, and exhorting those around him, and sending messages to his absent friends to meet him in heaven. While suffering extremely, he was asked if it was not hard to die', to which he answered 'No! No!' 'Jesus can make a dying bed as soft as downy pillows are."

"The last to go was Joseph, a child of joy and promise to his family. He wanted to go, saying 'I want to go to be with little Nellie and my brothers. Great sympathy was felt and manifested by all classes of persons for this deeply afflicted family, but owing to the nature of the disease, comparatively few persons used their personal attention on the sick. Of those who did, Mr. Robert Sowers deserves special commendation. At the risk of his own life and sacrifice of the benefits of the harvest season, he stayed night and day nursing the sick and burying the dead.

"The parents being Christians found the consolations of Israel sufficient to enable them to bear up with fortitude under the great bereavement. Heaven grant to continue them grace sufficient for their trials and may parents and children be found ready when the Master calls, to go up to meet the dear ones who have gone on before."

Obituary: 1960 - Mrs. Maude Wynkoop Wortman, teacher for 22 years. Her home had been in Ashburn for greater part of her life; died in Loudoun Hospital last Friday after a short illness. Until she entered the hospital she had been making her home in Broad Run Farms with her nephew and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Finnelle.

Mrs. Wortman, 80, was a daughter of the late James and Jennie Miller Wynkoop of Round Hill where she grew to womanhood. After her marriage to Arthur T. Wortman she moved to Ashburn. Mr. Wortman died in 1940.

Mrs. Wortman taught at the Sterling School for 22 years. After her retirement in 1950 she worked at Garfield Hospital in Washington for six years. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church at Ashburn.

Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Katherine McDonald, of Birmingham, Ala., and several nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Miss Nellie Wynkoop (1885-1906- Ketoctin Cem., Round Hill) - Miss Nellie Wynkoop, dau. of Mr. Thomas Wynkoop, died of peritonitis on Wednesday night at her home near Paxson, aged about 20 yrs. The deceased was one of twin sisters, and her untimely death is universally regretted in her community where her sweet, girlish life had been spent. While yet so young she had, for some years, been a devoted member of the M.E. Church, South.

Obituary: Samuel Wynkoop - Falls Dead in Garden - Venerable Citizen of Bluemont Succumbs to Heart Trouble on Thursday, June 27, 1918.

Mr. Samuel Wynkoop, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of Bluemont. Dropped dead from heart trouble in the garden at his home on Thursday of last week. He would have been 80 years of age during the present month, and had given no intimation of feeling otherwise than in his usual good health.

Mr. Wynkoop had long been a valued citizen of the community and leaves a host of sincere friends. He was a consistent member of the Methodist church and had lived an upright life worthy of imitation.

He is survived by his wife and one son, Mr. Ernest Wynkoop, besides a large family connection in the county.

His funeral took place on Saturday, Rev. W. E. Woolf officiating. The burial was at Ebenezer Church.

  

Mr. Samuel Wynkoop lived about one mile east of Bluemont on old Alexandria Turnpike (known as "Snickersville Pike"). Obit: Wynkoop - At her home near Snickersville on the night of the 28th

of April (1895), Leola, only daughter of S. T. Wynkoop, in the 27th year of her age.

Such a short time, it seems, since little Bessie was taken home to bloom in endless youth, and now the last dear daughter has been called up higher, leaving sad hearts and blighted hopes behind her. Her health had been bad for five or six years, and even then, unknown to her loved ones, the dread disease, spinal menengitis, which carried off her little brother, was fastening on her . . . She was converted in her 15th year, under the ministry of Rev. E. H. Henry and united with the church at Woodgrove, ever since which time she has been a true, faithful, consistent Christian and the living Saviour who kept her this far, did not desert her in her hour of need. . . . As sick as she was herself, her living heart seemed always going out after her ailing mother, and her frequent questions showed how she longed to be up and caring for "Ma".

On Wednesday her body was taken to the church at Snickersville, where she had so often gone up with the multitude that kept holy day and in the altar before which she had so often knelt to commemorate her Savior's dying love. Her funeral was preached by her pastor, Rev. Mr. Saunders, from the last clause of the 1st Verse, 21st Chapter of Revelations, after which, all that was mortal was laid to rest in the beautiful "God's Acre" at Ebenezer . . .

Garrett Wynkoop was an active member of Harmony Methodist Church (Hillsboro Circuit), built in 1833 in what is now the town of Hamilton (W.P.A. Records, Loudoun Co., Va. by Mrs. Jewell). Among members listed as "Recorded in Lamb's Book of Life" are following allied connections of Wynkoop family: Beale, Beans, Beaver, Jones, Orrison, Ruse, Saunders, Tavenner, Thomas, White & Others.

Garrett was also active in Grove Meeting House, Woodburn and was listed in Hillsboro Circuit M.E. Classes as early as 1835 at Wood Grove (above Round Hill). On Sept. 14, 1836, he was received into Grove Meeting House, Woodburn. Both of Garrett's wives were - members of Grove Meeting House, Woodburn before he was married to them. Mary S. Hunt, her father and mother, and Mary Lacy with her sister Mahala Lacy, who m. Cornelius Wynkoop, son of Cornelius and Cornelia Wynkoop.

Garrett worked for Solomon Ruse about 1827 to 1830 according to Richard Ruse in his Recollections of Hamilton, Va." Garrett was a blacksmith and farmer.

According to Miss Agnes Wynkoop, dau. of Levi Wynkoop, Garrett, her grandfather, was very close to his brothers, Richard and Philip Henry (known as Henry). (See letter from (Philip) Henry to Garrett, written while Henry was in service during Civil War)

1894 - Death of Mr. Wynkoop - Mr. Garrett Wynkoop, one of Woodburn's most aged and highly respected citizens, was found dead in his bed on

Monday morning last. Mr. Wynkoop had been in ill health for several years, but on the previous evening appeared in his usual vigor. Failing to respond to breakfast call, his daughter entered his room and made the sad discovery of his death. He had been a member of the M.E. Church, South, for probably over half a century and lived a model Christian life. He was held in the loftiest esteem by all who met him in his daily walks of life, and his death will be a sad blow to the community in which he lived.

His remains were interred in Harmony Burying Ground in this town on Tuesday, his pastor, Rev. Dr. House officiating. Further services to his memory, we learn, will be held in the Grove Church at Woodburn next Sunday morning.

Garrett Wynkoop lived on Route 7, Loudoun County, between Clark's Corner and Hamilton, with his first wife, Mary S. Hunt. The house there in which Levi Wynkoop was born is still standing. Garrett lived in the Woodburn area with his second wife, Mary Lacy, and died there. When Garrett's daughter, Ruth Hannah, married John Wynkoop, son of Richard and Frances Wynkoop. Garrett and Mary Lacy Wynkoop were living in the Benedum house at the N.E. corner of the junction of routes 719 and 725.

John and Ruth Hannah were married in the Benedum house. "They rode horseback, mama behind him on the same horse, to the home of Uncle Landon and Aunt Sarah Wynkoop Jones who lived in Hughesville, after the marriage ceremony. Papa (John William Wynkoop)

taught school in the old stone barn on the 'Charlie Benedum' place. It was just a little way from our old home and was called the 'Stock' place. Charlie and Annie Benedum lived there now. They have invited me out but I have never been."

After his wife's death, Levi left Virginia for a short time and lived in Maryland. Joseph Thomas Wynkoop, his cousin, son of William Bennett Wynkoop, lived in the next home to Levi on Black Oak Ridge. Levi H. and Eliza J. Wynkoop had four children:

When Agnes Pleasant Wynkoop lived on Black Oak Ridge she attended Silcott Springs School, which was across the road from her home "Wynmont". Her teacher was Emma Piggott, who lived nearby. Mr. and Mrs. Sanders were also neighbors. She described her home, which is still standing, as follows:

The front of the house faces the driveway, which runs from the road along the front and around the side. The view from the front is of the fields below the driveway with the mountains in the distance. There is a steep sloping lawn from the porch to the driveway, landscaped with flowers and shrubs. At the corner where the driveway rounded the side, there is a hitching post with a long flight of stairs up to the porch. At that time the porch had a lovely fancy railing.

The dining room and kitchen were in the frame part of the house with three bedrooms, one over the parlor, one over the sitting room and one downstairs off the hall. There are two fireplace chimneys, one of which is very old. The house is still standing but is a tenant house now and neglected.

"John West came to Loudoun County around 1784, settling on 400 acres purchased by his father, William West, from Mahlon Kirkbride in 1764. The land lay on the northwest fork of Goose Creek and joined, the land of Kirkbride, willed to his sons, Timothy, et al, which has been previously touched on here. John West married Hannah Ball in 1791 and presumably built this house about the same time, on the southern end of the 400-acre tract, the northern end being occupied by his brother, William, Jr.

". . . . In 1830 John West sold his house to Morris Osburn . . . , the house was sold by the Osburn heirs to Eli Nichols in 1860, to James Cross in 1872, William Janney in 1876, Levi Wynkoop in 1881, Mrs. Eva Rawlings in 1902, and J. S. Grey in 1905; Mr. & Mrs. Moncure N. Lyon in 1929, who find it useful as a tenant house."

Obituary: Agnes P. Wynkoop, formerly of Loudoun County and a McLean resident, died Feb. 13 (1976) following a brief illness. Born at Wynmont, the family home on Black Oak in Loudoun County. Miss Wynkoop was the daughter of Levi and Eliza Carlisle Wynkoop.

She is survived by five nieces, Maxine Otley Fleming of Purcellville, Dorothy Otley Hoge of Washington, Ga., Agnes Orrison Kirby and Frances Orrison Berry of McLean and Louise Wynkoop Gray of New York.
Also surviving are three nephews, ElRey

Otley of Richmond, Harold Otley of Alexandria and Russell Orrison of McLean. Services were held Feb. 16 at Money and King Funeral Home, Vienna, with the Rev. John Tate officiating. Interment was in Andrew Chapel Cemetery near McLean.

(Memories of Dranesville Inn) "We're the Oldest People in Hamilton" "We're the oldest people in Hamilton now that Mrs. Edna Shoemaker died," Bessie Ann Jenkins said. "I'm 90 or 91, July 31, 1886 - you figure it out," Albert Jenkins added.

"Well, I'm going to tell my age," Mrs. Jenkins said. "I'm 94."

"I was born at the old Dranesville Hotel, Old Drovers' Rest, they called it. My parents were Samuel and Mary Catherine Jenkins, they ran it as an inn for 40 years till they died." Mr. Jenkins began.

Mrs. Jenkins, a Loudoun native, a Wynkoop, was raised on a farm near Woodburn on Rt. 704 outside of Hamilton. They both say Loudoun was cattle country earlier.

"We have two sons, one in Arlington, one in California, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren," Mrs. Jenkins said.

Letter written by Philip Henry Wynkoop to his brother Garrett in 1863 when he was stationed near Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia during the Civil War. The letter was found in the Bible of Mary Ella McMichael with the following note written by her on the margin: "Written by my father to his brother Garrett in 1863 - stationed near Spotsylvania C.H., Va."

"Dear Brother and Friends: I take my pen in hand once more to send you a few lines to let you know how I am at this time and where I am also. We are encamped 9 miles from Orange Court House in Orange County. Know in respect to myself I am enjoying good health, hoping when these few imperfect lines reach you and your family may find you all enjoying the same with blessing for I can truly say it is one amongst the foremost things in our existence. Garret I am glad to tell you that we have a good preacher in our batalion, his name is Duncin. He is an Episcopalian and as for myself I am no sectarian. I love to hear the gospel preached. It still brings to my heart joy and gladness, and even while I write these few lines I tell you I want you to tell my brothers and sisters at the Grove that there still remains a sort of grace in this vissel of mine. I do expect if I am faithful to death to wear a crown - which my Lord and Master will give me and not me only - but it is for you and for all who stand firmly on the watch walls of Zion - and fights faithful until the great Shepherd of the sheep shall call them home. I feel thankful the gospel still sounds sweet to my ears. Give my love to the Grove brothers and sisters and tell them to fight on, we shall soon all get home to wear our crown. I am in a hurry. I would like to write more I must stop for the want of time. Goody Bye. My love to you and family.

Obituary of Mrs. Mary Wynkoop McMichael - Loudoun Times-Mirror, Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia March 1960: "Mrs. McMichael, member of early Loudoun family - Mrs. Mary Wynkoop McMichael, last member of the immediate family of the late Philip Henry and Katherine Corr Wynkoop, died at her home, Edgecomb, near Bluemont last Friday.

"She was 88 years old and the wife of Samuel J. McMichael Sr. Had she lived two more months the couple would have observed their 65th wedding

anniversary. Mrs. McMichael was born and reared in the Woodburn section of Loudoun. She was a member of one of the county's best known families.

Mrs. McMichael had returned home only a short time ago from Loudoun Hospital where she had been under treatment for a heart condition. She had been ill about a month. Mrs. McMichael was a lifelong member of the Bluemont Methodist Church."

The following is extracted from a letter to me from Mrs. Loreine Collins Dietrich, 1421 East 19th St., Tulsa, Oklahoma 74120, November 1, 1973: "As you probably know, Richard Wynkoop was the first to publish any records on the family and in desperation published the information he had in 1884, knowing it was incomplete and that all of the data could not be documented. It brought the response that he expected and the family began pouring in names and dates for additions and corrections. He published a second book and finally the third book, of some size, with further corrections and additions. It was a footnote in this book that gave me my tie-in with the Wynkoop family."

Joseph VanPelt resided in Southampton County, Pa. He was a tenant of the Joseph Bourn family and owned 55 acres between 1779 and 1786. In 1784 Joseph had eight children in his family. All the children were buried in North Fork Cemetery, Loudoun County, Va. per DAR descendant. There are no headstones or records for the early burials.

Obituary - 14 April 1966 - Mrs. Mary C. Kerrick, 83, of Bluemont, died at her home after a long illness. A native of Loudoun she was a daughter of John and Hannah Wynkoop. Her husband, Francis M. Kerrick, died in 1958. She was a member of the Bluemont Methodist Church.

Mrs. Kerrick is survived by a son, J. Marion Kerrick, of Bluemont, and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Hannah Coates, of Bethel, Alaska. She also leaves a brother, William Wynkoop #12224, of Leesburg, two sisters, Misses Fannie #12223 and Ruth #12229 Wynkoop, of Round Hill, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The Rev. T. Lupton Simpson was the officiating clergyman. The pallbearers were Walton Mann, Eston King, H. A. Martz, Harrison Martz, Jack Allder and Glenn Lloyd.

"John W. Chappelle, 84, retired orchardist, died last Thursday at his home near Purcellville after a long illness. His death was due to the infirmities of age.

A native of Fauquier Co., he was son of the late James W. and Elizabeth Slack Chappelle. He was a member of Round Hill Methodist Church.

His wife, Mitylene Wynkoop, whom he married 55 years ago, survives him. He is also survived by a daughter, Mrs. Herbert I. Downs of Purcellville, a son, L. Francis Chappelle of Middleburg, two sisters, Mrs. Richard Corley and Mrs. Viola Tinsman of Fairfax and one granddaughter.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Hall Funeral Home and were conducted by Rev. Roland Nelson. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Hamilton.

Howard T. Lowe, son of Rector Lewis Lowe, said his father and family came to Ash Grove area of Fairfax Co. when Howard was a young man and unmarried. They first lived on Spring Hill Road, but their home burned, the family Bible being destroyed in the fire. His father had a farm at "Cool Springs" near where Dulles Airport now is. Howard knew "Aunt Lizzie" Wynkoop; mentioned Thomas (Moses Thomas), her son, and said James Wynkoop, his cousin, had a men's store in Leesburg. Said his cousin, Molly E. Wynkoop, m. Robert Wynkoop #1-14-22. Also said Bertie Wynkoop, dau. of James W. & Virginia Miller Wynkoop, m. ____________ Donohoe.

Obituary: "Lloyd Braxton Payne, 85, of Hamilton, died Nov. 24, 1974 in Loudoun Memorial Hospital following an illness of several weeks.

A native of Fauquier County, Mr. Payne was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon S. Payne. He had been employed in general farming.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Louise Colbert Payne; two sons, Thomas J. Payne of Hamilton and George W. Payne of Silver Spring, Md., two brothers, Lucien Payne, Sr. of Chantilly and Lemuel Payne of Lincoln; one sister, Mrs. Walter Arnett of Purcellville.

Dies after long illness - Mrs. Leola Seaton Fleming, wife of Mr. John Fleming of Purcellville, died early Wednesday morning at her home after six weeks of intense but patient suffering. During the past year she has been a patient at different times at the Loudoun Hospital, but due to her serious condition, no medical aid could be furnished and she has grown steadily worse. She dies at the age of twenty-nine, leaving a husband and an eleven year old daughter, who she has served affectionately. Since their marriage Mr. & Mrs. Fleming have been residents of the Upperville and Bloomfield Community, moving to Purcellville about seven years ago.

Mrs. Fleming is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Seaton of near Philmont and was born and grew to womanhood in the county in which she died. She was a member of the Purcellville M.E. Church, South and though young, has made for herself a large number of friends, who will miss her in the church and social life of her community.

She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Helen; parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Seaton; one sister, Mrs. Guy Hampton, Purcellville and one brother, Douglas Seaton of Philmont.

Funeral services were held at her late home today, Rev. F. T. Ridgeway and Miss Mary Elizabeth Hughes, officiating. Interment at Upperville Cemetery.

Obituary: Mrs. McMichael, member of early Loudoun family. Mrs. Mary Wynkoop McMichael, last member of the immediate family of the late Philip

Henry and Katherine Corr Wynkoop, died at her home, Edgecomb, near Bluemont last Friday.

She was 88 yrs. old and the wife of Samuel J. McMichael, Sr. Had she lived two more months the couple would have observed their 65th wedding anniversary. Mrs. McMichael was born and reared in the Woodburn section of Loudoun. She was a member of one of the county's best known families.

Mrs. McMichael had returned home only a short time ago from Loudoun Hospital where she had been under treatment for a heart condition. She had been ill about a month. Mrs. McMichael was a lifelong member of the Bluemont Methodist Church.

Besides her husband she is survived by one son, Samuel J. McMichael, Jr. of Washington and two grandsons, Samuel McMichael III and Paul C. McMichael.

Funeral services were held Sunday in the Hall Funeral Home at Purcellville, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. M. G. Wooten. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery, Hamilton.

The pallbearers were Westmoreland Wynkoop, Henry Wynkoop, George Harding, Leigh Jenkins, Carlton Redman and Hulon Kilby.

Location: From Leesburg, Route 15 south to Route 704, turn right on Route 769, and left on Route 803. It is a short distance to end of state maintained road (sign); Just before the sign on the left is a wooded, overgrown area which contains what is left of the Grove Cemetery. On one side of the cemetery is a lane and opposite the cemetery is the remains of what, we think, was the Grove Meeting House where they held the Methodist Classes mentioned in the text. This is in the Mt. Gilead area.

The walls of the "Grove Meeting House" are still standing, but the roof is gone. The building and the land are overgrown with vines and weeds. The walls were constructed of whole tree logs, very rough, large at one end tapering to the other end. Fieldstones were wedged between the logs to fill in the gaps and then mud-plastered. Later a white plaster was applied. The foundation, including under the floor, is of fieldstones, with whole tree logs laid under rough planks for the floor. The building is about 20 feet square with several windows and two doors, one in front and one at left side rear. A clapboard siding was applied at one time and the boards remain on the right outside wall. The rear wall had been propped up. Handmade nails were used for the siding and are still protruding from the logs on the other sides. There is a log doorstep at the front door and flat fieldstones leading to the step.

The following reference is taken from the Leesburg, Virginia Methodist Church Records - Part 1, by Mrs. Walter Towne Jewell (loaned to Mrs. Jewell by Rev. Melvin Lee Steadman, Jr.) Earliest records not available.

I recorded those from 1832 to 1848 as so many of the Wynkoops and allied family members attended these classes.

"Conference year ending March 1839. - As Carr's Meeting House was destroyed by fire during past year and the Congregation at the Gap being small - it was judged most proper to have but one preaching place in the county, accordingly all the classes in the country were removed to the Grove Meeting House, which is now the only appointment - at which place you preach on the last Sabbath morning of every month, and on the Wednesday two weeks succeeding. The Grove Meeting House is an unfinished building and is very uncomfortable, especially in winter - it ought by all means to be finished (and as Carr's Meeting House has been destroyed) the prospect of this object is fairer than heretofore. There seems to be a rising inclination on the part of the people to accomplish this matter, and by perseverance, I think the object may be affected - Success to the effort."

"Feby 1837-38 Official Returns . . . There are three appointments in the country attached to this charge - Carr's Meeting H., Grove, and Mountain Gap. At each of these places there is preaching every three months on Sabbath and once every six weeks on Wednesday - by this arrangement you preach once a month on Sabbath and once every two weeks on Wednesday, in the Country."

The cemetery stands on a knoll, has a high stone wall with an arched stone entrance, in very good condition. It is evident that the cemetery itself was neglected for a long time, but it is now being cared for and those stones still readable are either on graves or standing against the stone wall. There are many broken and unreadable stones.

"Harmony Church was built in 1833. Called the Hillsboro Circuit. There were about eight appointments: Hamilton, Waterford, Woodgrove, Arnold Grove, Ebenezer and two or three others between the hills. There were always two preachers sent to this circuit, a married man and a single man. The Grove did not belong to the circuit then."

Garrett Wynkoop was also mentioned in the above account and served the Harmony Church in many capacities. He is listed in the quarterly meetings and was on some committees. He also attended the 'Grove' meetings regularly.

GEORGE W. WYNKOOP - Farmer, Berryville, Va. - Clarke County, son of Richard A. and Mary F. Wynkoop, was born in Loudoun County, Va. in 1835. His parents were natives of that county, and had eleven children, eight of whom are living. Albert J., John W., James M., Thomas H., Eliza J., Catherine E., wife of Samuel T. Wynkoop of Loudoun County, Mary F., Hannah A., wife of the Rev. James H. Boyd of Clarke County, Va. and Richard, who was wounded while in the Confederate service, but died some months after of consumption. Their father died in 1867, at the age of sixty-five years, and their mother is still living at the age of seventy-eight years.

George W. was married in 1861 to Susan A., daughter of Benjamin and Mary Saunders, of Loudoun County, Va., and by this union there have been born to them ten children, four of whom died within eight days of diphtheria. Those living are: Mary F. (wife of Benjamin B. Parker), George W., William A., Charles T., Herbert M., and Norman B. Mr. Wynkoop learned the stone-mason's trade, which he followed till about fifteen years ago, since which time he has been engaged in farming. In August, 1878, he purchased the farm where he resides, on 206 1/2 acres, upon this he has built an elegant brick dwelling and other good substantial buildings. During the war he enlisted in the Sixth Virginia Cavalry, in which he served ten months and was discharged on account of wounds which he received, and from which he has never fully recovered. Mr. Wynkoop is well known for his untiring industry. After his return from the army, pierced with a bullet in his breast and his right arm in a sling, he cut off a small field of corn with his left hand and built a pair of stills, with a chimney twenty-five feet high, all with his left hand, and thus by his perseverance and industry he has risen from very humble circumstances to that of competency. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.

AARON DUBLE, farmer, Wickliffe, son of Andrew and Mary S. Duble, was born in Washington County, Md., August 4, 1822. In 1848, he was married in Clarke County, Va., to Jane Eliza, daughter of Abram and Mary (Grim) Copenhaver, and they have been blessed with seven children:

Mr. Duble ranks among the self-made men of Clarke County. He was reared on a farm, but at the age of sixteen years, became apprenticed to the trade of millwright, which business he followed until 1865, when he turned his attention to farming, and in 1877 purchased the farm of 131 acres, where he now dwells and has built an elegant dwelling house. He has been honored with the magistrate in his district and is a member of the Masonic fraternity.

An elderly white-haired man, who, although not as tall, looks very much like Connie Mack, stopped in The Star newsroom the other day.

"My name is Samuel J. McMichael," he said. "I'm in town on a little visit from Round Top, Va. That's near Bluemont. I've been living there over 20 years. I thought you might be interested in a recent anniversary, the Ford Theater disaster - 58 years ago this month. I was in it and I believe I am the only living survivor. I am 82 years old."

"The writer knew that by the Ford Theater disaster the visitor did not mean the tragedy of April 14, 1865, when President Lincoln was assassinated there, but a much later event. Mr. Ford never got his theater back after the assassination. Secretary of War Stanton had the stage and boxes and balcony ripped out and it was converted to an office building. In the 90's the floors fell through to the basement with a great loss of life.

"It was at 9:40 a.m. on June 9, 1893," said Mr. McMichael. "I was employed in the annex, which did not collapse. I believe I was the first person to enter the building after the crash."

We were all employees of the Record and Pension Office. There were about 500 of us - all men. There wasn't a woman employed in the building."

I was sitting at my desk in the annex when there was a great crash in the main building and clouds of dust began to pour from it."

Everything in the front part of the main building had fallen in, floors, pillars, girders, timbers, desks, chairs, plaster and employees. In all, 22 were killed and 68 injured."

"When I got out I went to send a telegram to my parents in South Carolina to tell them I was uninjured and to see the girl I married two years later. We had our 56th wedding anniversary in May."

"On the following Wednesday a group of us who had escaped injury went to the White House reception, for in those days the President held a public

reception every Wednesday at noon. As we advanced in line I was the first one to reach President Grover Cleveland and said to him that we were survivors from the Ford Theater."

"He grasped my hand, placed an arm around my shoulders and expressed his great pleasure that we had not been injured. I then had the pleasure of introducing each of my friends to him and each received a hearty handshake and congratulations."

He also lived in California, but died just before my father (George Melvin Wynkoop #l22323) Also met and loved Aunt Ethel (Ethel Wynkoop Kackley #122323), she was a dear to us. Met Aunt Jane (Jane Wynkoop Revercomb #122321) briefly, and her family, one son I believe. It was so long ago."
