Wynkoop Family Bible

James L. Murphy*

This record was copied from a Bible in the possession of Mrs. David Lee, 3502 Farley Drive, Hilliard, OH 43206. It was given to Mrs. Lee by a workman dismantling a farmhouse near Hilliard.

Strickland Wynkoop and Martha Wynkoop were married 1815. He was born May 14, 1790. She was born May 3, 1796. (Strickland Wynkoop is buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Norwich Twp., Franklin Co., Ohio. He died January 4, 1882, aged 91y 7m 21d, according to the Franklin Co. Probate Court record. A graves registration card on file at The Ohio Historical Society gives the correct date of death, but gives his birth date as 5-13-1780, in Pennsylvania.)

Notes from Richard Wynkoop's 1904 edition of Wynkoop Genealogy in the United States of America:

    657. Strickland Wynkoop, (Gerrit 372, Gerardus 153, Gerrit 45, Gerret 5, Cornelius, 1:): b. May 15, 1789: m., 1st, Martha Egbert, of Huntington County, Penn., who died about 1831, through her clothing taking fire. He m., 2d, about 1833, Eliza Sandy.
He settled in Huntington County; but a few years later, he removed to Columbus, Ohio, which was then a mere hamlet. He removed from Columbus to its vicinity, soon after the death of his first wife, and there he raised a family; after which he removed to Wapello, Mich. There his second wife died, and he returned to Ohio, and lived with his children. Four of his sons were in the Union army.

I have it on good authority that there is at least one small mistake in the Wynkoop Genealogy material on Strickland Wynkoop. The book says that he and his family went to Wapello, Michigan. From Federal Census records it appears that they went instead to Wapello, Louisa County, Iowa. Many thanks to Tom Wilbur [email protected] for pointing this out to me.
