Thomas Wynkoop of Grand Traverse County, Michigan.
Thomas Wynkoop
of Grand Traverse County, Michigan.

THOMAS WYNKOOP, farmer, of the town of Paradise, Grand Traverse County, was born in Pennsylvania in 1820. During his infancy his parents moved to Niagara County, N. Y., where he was brought up on a farm. He lived in Illinois about ten years, and in the fall of 1864 came to Grand Traverse County and homesteaded his present farm in Section 4, Town 25, Range 10, this being the first homestead in the town; at that time there were no settlers in the town. He moved upon his land in December, 1865, being preceded as a settler in the town by J. W. Kingsley and William Robison. Mr. Wynkoop was first supervisor of the town, and has held that office eleven terms. He married in 1849 to Betsy Kingsley; they have two sons and one daughter.

I'd like to thank Tom Wilbur, [email protected], of Okemos, Michigan, for sending this clipping to me. He wrote me:

"It is from an old Grand Traverse County, (Michigan), history. But I didn't write down a citation for it, (it isn't my family)."

"The town of Paradise mentioned in the attached really is Paradise Township. The biggest town in that township is Kingsley -- you can see it roughly ten miles south of Traverse City on your Michigan map. As I think I once mentioned, I grew up on Garfield Avenue -- a main road south out of Traverse City and a road that ends at Kingsley. As a young man I spent a lot of time stomping around in the woods of Paradise Township (the Boardman River runs through or near it and there is a lot of state land there)."

Thanks again, Tom, I really appreciate it.

    All my best,

    Chris
