FIRST REFORMED DUTCH CHURCH GROUND

Burying ground around the First Reformed Dutch Church at Kingston, N. Y.

The first Church, built of logs in 1661, stood upon this ground. The first preacher was Dr. Harmanus Blom of Holland, who preached his first sermon Sept. 12, 1660, to a congregation of sixteen members. This building was burned by Indians in 1663 and forty-five villagers were taken into captivity. The Church was rebuilt in 1667 on the same site. Here Governor Clinton was inaugurated the first Governor of the State, July 30, 1777. The Church, with most of the village was burned by the British on Oct. 16, 1777. The present Church building was dedicated Sept. 28, 1852. The preaching was in Holland Dutch, that language being used there until 1809.

The ground is well cared for. Many stones are scaling and integrating from age and exposure.

Copied by Byron J. Terwilliger, September, 1927, and by Byron J. Terwilliger and Dr. J. Wilson Poucher, October, 1930.

Notes and Acknowledgement:

All pages are numbered at the bottom of each page.

The three digit codes after a number of these entries represents the age of the deceased in years, months, and days. Ulster County is comprised of Towns, (Townships.) Ulster County has 19 Towns and within those Towns are the cities, villages, etc. Saxton is about fifteen to twenty miles north of Kingston.

I'd like to thank Charles Ostrander, [email protected], of Florida, for sending me the bulk of these inscriptions back in June of 1998. Charles spent three days searching through his unindexed copy of Old Gravestones of Ulster County, New York looking for Wynkoop family members for me. Charles, I can't tell you how much I have appreciated your help.

    All my best,

    Chris.
