The Chant Cemetery is located on Hwy 71
just north of Y-City, Arkansas in Scott County. I videotaped a small portion of this cemetery in March 1999. Probably at least half of this cemetery has
no markers and rocks mark where those graves are located. The majority of the unmarked graves are
located in the front of the cemetery.
Quite a few of the headstones have been handmade. The graves face the east, but the headstones
face the highway. Annually, the weekend
before Memorial Day, family and friends gather at the cemetery for Cemetery
Decoration Day. All grass and debris
are cleanded from the top of the graves and flowers are placed on the graves,
usually covering the whole top of each plot.
I have been told that no records were kept for this cemetery and the
unmarked graves may never be recognized.
