Virginia...HUDNALL counties prior to the Kanawha valley migration
The frontier of English settlement moved upstream from the Chesapeake Bay. The first permanent settlers landed at Jamestown
in 1607. By 1619 the colonists had created enough local government to start the General Assembly, and in just thirty years from settlement, the process of forming Virginia's counties was well established. Nansemond County, an extinct county, was named for the Nansemond Indians in 1642/43 fom Upper Norfolk. The county became the independent city of Nansemond in July 1972 and on 1 January 1974, merged with the city of Suffolk. Suffolk was incorporated as a town in 1808, and as a city in 1910. Parishes Chuckatuck (after 1643-1737), East (1643-1744), Lower (after 1643-1737), Lower Suffolk, South (after 1744), Suffolk (1737-    ), Upper (after 1643-after 1744), Upper Suffolk (after 1744, West (1643-before 1737).
Northampton County Captain John Smith first explored the peninsula in 1608. English colonists lived here briefly in 1614 for the purpose of salt extraction. Originally this county, formed in 1634, as one of the eight original shires, had been named Accomacke, meaning "across the water place". But in later years, after hostilites with the Natives, the thinking within the colony was to purge all Indian names. So in 1643, Northampton, named after the county in Great Britain, was created by the General Assembly in the Colony of Virginia.
Northumberland County was named for a County in England and originally called Chickcoun, the history of the county dates back to 1648 when it was officially established, although the area began to be settled earlier in the 17th Century. The county was split in the early 1650's with Lancaster County being formed from the southern part in 1652, and Westmoreland County being formed out of the western part of Northumberland County in 1653.
Lancaster County was settled in the mid-1600's and is located at the south eastern tip of Virginia's Northern Neck peninsula approximately 75 miles east of Richmond, 120 miles southeast of Washington, DC. It was formed in 1651 from Northcumberland and York Counties.
Prince William County In 1608, Captain John Smith and his band of frontiersmen rode a barge along the Potomac River, the first white men to touch the unnamed wilderness that is now known as Prince William County. The county was formed in 1731 from King George County and was named for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, second son of King George II. The territory, which included Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Loudon and Fauquier, was reduced to its present size in 1759.
Bedford County The English colony of Virginia was divided into eight shires in 1634. The shires were subsequently subdivided into large counties, and then smaller counties. Bedford County was formed from Lunenburg County by an act in November 1753, to take effect on 10 May 1754, with the seat of government to be the community of New London.
Fauquier County Formed May 1, 1759 from Prince William County, received its name from Francis Fauquier, Governor of Virginia at the time. Later changes occurred from 1823-1824.

No Virginia census schedules are known to exist for 1790. Only scattered schedules for 1800 are extant. Apparently, both the 1790 and 1800 missing schedules were destroyed during the British attack on Washington during the War of 1812. The 1790 schedules for Virginia were based on state enumeration's done about 1785.

TAX LIST COLUMNS
The Land tax lists avary. There may be extra columns for city lots. The "1790" lists usually give monetary amounts in English pounds and shillings. The "1800" lists usually use dollars and cents.
    For a generic list of Land Tax List column headings use the following as a guide:
    * Name of individual charged with tax * Quantity of land * Rate of land per acre
    * Value of land * Amount of tax
The Personal Property Tax List column headings represent the property categories that were taxable. These items were defined by Virginian law. Each county was responsible for accessing each individual based on these items. There were no standard forms available for the tax collector to use so it was his responsibility to handwrite his own forms. This created a non-standard tax list form because each comissioner created his own style of tax forms. Hence we find a variety of column headings for all the tax lists we photocopy. The Personal Property tax lists also vary. There may be extra columns additional taxable items such as different kinds of carriages or wagons. Billiard tables were sometimes included. Practicing physicians also had a special column. The column headings could also be different from page to page within the same tax list. The "1790" lists usually give monetary amounts in English pounds and shillings. The "1800" lists usually use dollars and cents.The same applies to the Land Tax column headings but not in as great a variation.
For a generic list of Personal Property Tax List column headings use the following as a guide:

    * Blacks over 16 * Blacks over 12 and under 16 * Horses, etc * Carriage wheels
    * Ordinary licenses * Stud horses * Rates of covering and season * Amount of tax   

WEST VIRGINIA, Kanawha County was formed in an Act of the Virginia Legislature in 1789 from portions of Greenbrier and Montgomery counties. "Kanawha" comes from an indian name meaning "place of white stone" probability because of the salt that was found in the area. The original county was about 120 miles long and nearly 100 miles wide. The western border was at the Big Sandy River and the county extended east to Sewell Mountain on what was the Greenbrier county line. To the north the county was bounded by the Little Kanawha River and extended south to the boundaries of Montgomery and Tazewell counties, Virginia and the state of Kentucky.

KENTUCKY was never a territory or a province. From its earliest history until it was admitted as a state in the union, it was part of Virginia. As settlements spread westward new counties were organized in the Old Dominion, the frontier county extending its boundaries indefinitely into the wilderness.
Mason County  formed from Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1789. First organized in 1788, Mason included one-fourth of the territory of KY in that part of the state, east of the Licking River. The early settlers came from Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Maryland. Maysville, at the mouth of Limestone Creek, was known as Limestone prior to 1790. It was made a town in 1787 and in 1833 became a city. Washington the old county seat, was once a thriving town in the uplands, but suffered a decline beginning in 1844, when the county seat was removed to Maysville.
