"Article I, Section 2, of the Constitution requires an "Enumeration" of the population of the United States every ten years.  The first census began on the first Monday in August, 1790, barely a year after the Inauguration of President Washington.  There have been twenty-one censuses since the first, the most recent one taken on April 1, 2000."   Info from the University of Virginia Library

To date, 1/31/2003, have found no census or tax records for Joseph or Mary Ann in Athens County, Ohio. There in 1820, Joseph and Mary Ann's son Thomas is listed with two females above the age of 45 indicating that one could be his mother. No other related families in Athens County in either 1820 or 1830 show a male or female old enough to be Joseph or Mary Ann.

The parents of my family's ancestor Thomas HUDNALL are undefined. We can be "almost" certain that Thomas is a direct descendant of Joseph HUDNALL, Jr. and Mary Ann TAYLOR (the progenitors of the Kanawha County, (West) Virginia HUDNALL line), most likely a grandson. Prior to 1850, census records did not list a spouse or children by name thus Thomas does not appear by name until 1850 where he is shown as head of household with his wife Mary. The first known record of Thomas in Kanawha County is that of his marriage on December 06, 1849 to Mary Jane GOFF. The hand written record clearly shows Mary’s name as GOFF while family tradition states her name as POFF. During my research I have looked for any evidence leading to Mary’s name as either GOFF or POFF playing an impartial role. I have found nothing absolute but am quite certain that Thomas’ wife is Mary POFF as family tradition dictates. I further believe that Mary’s parents are George POFF and Lucy TRAIL who married in Montgomery County, Virginia October 15, 1825 but again, no real proof. Most POFF researchers have George and Lucy as being deceased by 1850 (with three known children named Lewis, Margaret and Julia) as they do not appear on any 1830 or 1840 census records. Ironically in 1850, a George and Lucy POFF show up in Kanawha County and on the census are living next door to our Thomas and Mary HUDNALL. Furthermore, two of their children marry into the HUDNALL line in Kanawha County. Eliza POFF (born in Floyd County, Virginia) married a John HUDNALL, Jr. May 21, 1857 and George POFF, Jr. (born in Floyd County, Virginia per his marriage record to 1st wife Almira FOSTER February 9, 1860) married a Rosanna HUDNALL June 16, 1867. Finally, a Cynthia Ann POFF married a Joseph HUDNALL October 31, 1848 but I am unsure if this might be another daughter of George and Lucy as she is married prior to the 1850 census. My heart tells me that she probably is, as George and Lucy are the first and only POFF family in Kanawha County in 1850. On a closing note, a Henry TRAIL and Catharine KINNETT were married on October 02, 1831 in Floyd County, Virginia, which was part of Montgomery County until 1831, where George POFF and Lucy TRAIL were married. From 1840 to 1880 there is a Henry and Catharine TRAIL (often transcribed as "Frail) in Kanawha County with a son John who married Eliza A. HUDNALL in KCWV on December 01, 1871, daughter of our Thomas and Mary (POFF) HUDNALL...Chuck Jennings revised 11/27/2002

To view individual descending KC(W)V records for certain children of Joseph HUDNAL, Jr. and Mary Ann TAYLOR, "Click" next to the individuals name to see information separately rather than collectively as it appears on this page. Please note that uncertain HUDNALL surname spellings as well as all children’s names shown 1810-1840 are probable and speculative at best, based on post 1840 census info from Kanawha County, (W)V.

Individuals ages on census records are erratic and inconsistent making a study of these records extremely challenging. The following information was collected in part to help identify the parents of my great, great grandfather Thomas HUDNALL. To date, his parents are still a mystery. Some Hudnall researchers have suggested that his parents are William and Rosanna (COCKRELL) HUDNALL "Click"or Benjamin and Nancy (RILEY) HUDNALL "Click" while another has said his parents are probably Anderson and Janette (LATHEY) HUDNALL. Because Thomas claimed to be born in Ohio on the 1880 Kanawha County census and again when he married his second wife in 1887, Thompson [s/o Thomas and Mary Ann (STRICKLIN or STRICKLER) HUDNALL "Click"] and Sabrina (GRINSTEAD) HUDNALL should also be considered and "are the most likely candidates" in this researcher’s eyes. All information is from Kanawha County, (West) Virgina except as noted by heading in "GREEN", personal annotations and fellow researchers additions/changes in "RED"
