He made a will in Decatur Co.,IN., April 17, 1842.(398) James's will was probated in Decatur Co.,IN., January 5, 1843.⁽³⁹⁹⁾ Decatur County Wills - Will Book A, pp. 134-6 Chambers, James Sr. Dated Apr. 17, 1842, Recorded Jan 5, 1843 : Wife Mary - Children: Nicholas, Nancy, James, John . Executors: His sons John and Nicholas. Witnesses Henry H. Talbott, John Smawly and Robert Champ. The same info appears in Probate Order Book D, page 262 but lists recording date as Jan 15, 1843. Complete Record Probate Book D, page 327. The will of James Chambers Sr. deceased was produced in court Jan. 5, 1843 and proved by the oath of John Smawley a subscribing witness. John and Nicholas Chambers were confirmed as executors, with John Smawley and John Hundman as their securities. The will was dated April 19, 1842 and mentioned his wife Mary, son Nicholas, daughter Nancy, sons James and John who had previously received their share. Henry H. Talbott and Robert Champ also witnessed the will. An inventory of James' personal property was filed in court appraised by Caleb Stark and Hugh Lawson and included a carriage, a clock, a sidesaddle and the usual household and farm items of the day. Final settlement Feb 1847. Probate Order Book F, page 80. The executors of the will of James Chambers deceased filed in court the receipts of Nancy and Mary Chambers and the estate was declared settled. Feb 10, 1847. This is my transcription of the copy of James' will I recieved: James Chambers' Will In the name of God Amen, I James Chambers Senior of the County of Decatur and the State of Indiana being weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory do make and publish this as my last will and testament. Hereby revoking and making void all former or other wills heretofore at any time by me made. First and principally I commend my soul to God who gave it and my body I direct to be interred in a decent Christian manner corresponding to my situation and secondly as respects my worldly effects as it has pleased God to entrust me with. I dispose of the same in the following manner, that is to say, I will and bequeath the farm on which I now reside situated in the county aforesaid on Clifty Creek containing eighty acres more or less, to my beloved wife Mary, my son Nicholas and my daughter Nancy, to be equally divided between them during the life of my said wife, but at the death of my said wife Mary my will is that the whole of my land be equally divided between my said son Nicholas and my daughter Nancy to have and to hold the same - in fee simple forever. And as it respects my personal property, I will and bequeath the same to my beloved wife Mary and my daughter Nancy and at my death to be equally divided between them except that I hereby will and bequeath the following articles to my said son Nicholas and at my death to be delivered to him towit, my wagon and harness and all my farming utensils and one bed and bedstead and bedding to be delivered to him as soon after my decease as possible. My wish is that my said wife and son Nicholas and daughter Nancy should live and remain together on the premises. I hereby direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon as possible by my executors out of the first monies which may come into their hands from any portion of my estate. I consider that I have heretofore given to my sons James and John as much of my property as I now bequeath to my other children and therefore I give them nothing more of my estate either real or personal. And lastly I hereby appoint my sons John Chambers and Nicholas Chambers executors of this my last will and testament. In witness thereof I have here onto set my hand and seal this 19th day of April in the year of our Lord 1842. Be it remembered that on this day towit the 5th day of January 1843 personally appeared before me the undersigned Clerk of the Probate Court of the County and State aforesaid John Smawley one of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing instrument purporting to be the last will and testament of James Chambers Senior deceased, who being by me duly sworn deposith and saith that he was present and saw the said James Chambers sign and seal said will and that he declared the same to be his last will and testament and that he subscribed his name as a witness thereto in the presence of the said testator and at his request and that at the time of executing said will he believed the said testator was of sound mind and disposing memory. Given under my hand seal this 5th day of January 1843 Henry H. Talbott (seal) The date of the will looked like 19 to me, but may have been 17 day of April, 1842.

James Sr. Chambers and Mary unknown had the following children:

3 ii. James Jr. Chambers was born after 1794. James died after 1846.

4 iii. John Chambers was born in KY about 1801. John died after 1870 in Decatur Co.,IN. He married Julia Ann Mills in Bartholomew Co.,IN, October 12, 1846.(400) Julia was born in IN about 1820.

John was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Greensburg, Washington Twp., Decatur Co.,IN..⁽⁴⁰¹⁾ I think this is the John Chambers mentioned in James Chambers Sr.'s will. John and James Jr. recieved their inheritance before James Sr.'s death.

5 iv. Nicholas Chambers was born 1803. Nicholas died 1875 in IN. His body was interred 1875 in Hebron Cemetery, Clay Twp., Decatur Co.,IN.. He married Lucinda Marlow in Decatur Co.,IN., October 22, 1856. Lucinda died after January 20, 1891 in Decatur Co.,IN. She made a will in Decatur Co.,IN, January 20, 1891. Nicholas eventually regained all of his father's property, by buying back the portions allotted to his sister, Nancy and her heirs. The last part was bought from John & Mary Parkison Anspach in 1863. I found two marriages for a Nicholas P. Chambers in Bartholomew Co., Indiana: Chambers, Nicholas Perry & Good, Barbary - Bartholomew - 2-11-1839 & Chambers, Nicholos P & Bush, Elizabeth - Bartholomew - 11-5-1840. I am unsure if either or both are this Nicholas. Lucinda Marlow Chambers is buried near him in Hebron Cemetery. I do not think he had any children, because his widow, Lucinda gave all the property to her brothers, nieces and nephews in her will.
