There are certain web sites which we all seem to use on a regular basis. But now and then, I see a site that does something just a bit different or appears to be particularly helpful. Perhaps on this list, you will find something with special appeal. Sometimes, instead of just a listing, I will tell you how you can make best use of the site.

Family Relationship Chart: People have asked me for help in determining family relationships. Often the charts I've seen use abbreviations and are very crowded in order to show as many as 10 generations. I've designed one with only 5 generations which should be easier to use because it has words instead of abbreviations. It includes directions for how to use the chart. Numbering Systems have you puzzled? There is an excellent "Guide to Consecutive Chart Numbers" included in a set of web pages by Chris Stern.

The Official Federal Land Patent Records Site The new Bureau of Land Management (BLM), General Land Office (GLO) Records Automation web site provides live access to Federal land conveyance records for the Public Land States. It also offers image access to more than two million Federal land title records for Eastern Public Land States, issued between 1820 and 1908. Also, images of Serial patents (land titles issued between 1908 and the mid-1960's) are currently being added to this web site. http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/

If you choose at some point to hire a professional researcher, may I suggest that you take time to view a helpful resource on the Internet, "So You're Going to Hire a Professional Genealogist," which you can reach from the home page of the Association of Professional Genealogists at: http://www.apgen.org/ Give attention also to the directory of professionals at that site. Find a directory of certified researchers and a description of the certification process at the web site of the Board for Certification of Genealogists at: http://www.bcgcertification.org/ ICAPGen is the designation for the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists. The Soundex Machine at the National Archives Site properly codes your surnames in preparation for census searches. http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/soundex/soundex.html
