Who cut down the 1st tree in Bogalusa?

This is my transcription of his obituary:

James Madison McLENDON / McCLENDON (b: May 11, 1848 - d: Aug 26, 1929; buried in Adams Cemetery) married Elizabeth "Sissy," ADAMS. He was 81 years old.

James Madison McLendon, the man who chopped down the first pine tree on the site of what is now the thriving city of Bogalusa, has succumbed to Father Time. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Miss Mary McLendon, in Adamstown, Monday morning, at the ripe old age of 81.

"Uncle Jimmy," as he was affectionately known, had been in splendid health for a person of his age, until a few months ago, when he began failing, going into a gradual decline.

There was no ceremony when he felled the first tree in what was then a virgin forest, extending in every direction for miles distant. He was one of the first employees engaged by the vanguard of the Great Southern Lumber Company, to clear the site for what was destined to be the largest saw mill in the world, and where a modern city of 16,000 citizens, and where several large industries are now located, and it fell to him to hew down the first tree. That was in the year 1905, and it was not until thirteen years later, he informed the late Col. W. H. Sullivan he had the ax in his possession and would gladly present it to him.

It was at the dedication of the City Hall, May 11, 1918, the axe was presented to Col. Sullivan, who in turn presented it to the city, where it now reposes in a glass case in the City Hall. On that occasion, "Uncle Jimmie" was presented with a $50 Liberty Bond by several of his friends. On numerous occasions since that date he has been a guest of honor at public functions, where he took pleasure in reminiscing over the pioneer days of the parish, and in his part in clearing out the wilderness of pine forests.

Although born in Georgia, he had resided in Mississippi and Louisiana since his early youth, and had been a resident of this section of the country for almost forty years. Until old age forced his retirement, he had engaged in the timber industry, and was for many years employed by the Great Southern Lumber Company.

He was a member of the Baptist Church, and of the Masonic fraternity, belonging to the Picayune lodge. This organization had charge of the funeral at the grave, Tuesday afternoon, and was assisted by the Rev. A. C. King, the deceased's pastor for many years; Rev. T. A. Bennett, a friend of long standing, and Rev. S. C. Rushing. Interment was in Adams Cemetery.

He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Miss Mary McLendon, with whom he and his wife were making their home at the time of his death.

A large number of floral offerings, and the messages of condolence and visits to his late residence by persons in all walks of life, gave mute, but conclusive evidence of the esteem in which he was held in the community where he had long resided.

Source: unknown. The obituary was sent to me along with his death certificate which I had request from the Louisiana Secretary of State.

Elizabeth "Sissy," ADAMS McClendon (b: Aug. 10, 1866 - d: Feb. 28, 1957; buried in Adams Cemetery) was the daughter of Sherwood W. ADAMS and Alicia MANNING Adam.

"... J. L. McClendon cut the first tree to begin the job, and Joe Collect served as his water boy. The ax McClendon used is in the mayor's office at City Hall. ... (page 26, Bogalusa: The Magic City by Ginn and Williams)

Ben Sellers cut the 1st (1908) and last (1938) log at the Great Southern Lumber Company Sawmill:

"... (T)he mill would start at 9 o'clock on the morning of October 17, 1908. From the siren of the power house, at the appointed hour, came a mighty blast. Crowds gathered on the overhead runway in the mill from which could be seen every step in the manufacture of lumber.... There were many visitors, including newspaper men and representatives of trade journals, who came from different parts of the country to watch the spectacle. ... Ben Sellers had the honor of sawing the first log. ..." -- Bogalusa Story by C. W. GOODYEAR, page 99.

"In April, 1938, the last of the Great Southern Lumber Company's virgin timber was manufactured into lumber in the Bogalusa sawmill. Ben Sellers cut the first log thirty years before and it was he who cut the last. The occasion was not a happy one. The few who gathered in the mill to watch the finish heard in the drone of the saws the death knell of a Goodyear lumber business that dated back sixty-two years to the days when Frank H. Goodyear made his start in Pennsylvania." -- Bogalusa Story by C. W. GOODYEAR, page 205.

    In Ponemah Cemetery (located on Louisiana Avenue about 1/2 mile east past Hwy. 21, and Louisiana Avenue), there are two (2) large Memorial Marker in what is called the "Sullivan Circle" memorializing "The Father" and "The Mother" of Bogalusa:

       The Father of Bogalusa 
        William Henry Sullivan

              

                     The inscription reads:

                           WILLIAM HENRY SULLIVAN
                                                 A PIONEER
                      NATURE COMBINED IN HIM INTEGRITY, ABILITY, AND
 INDUSTRY, TOGETHER WITH A FINE LOYALTY, HIGH IDEALS, AND AN UNBOUNDED
 CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE THAT MAD HIM ALWAYS A LEADER.
         WHEREVER HE LIVED HE WAS THE FIRST MAN IN THE COMMUNITY
 BUT NOWHERE DID HE FIND HIS REAL PLACE AS HE DID HERE.
       HERE AMIDST A VIRGIN FOREST HE FELLED THE FIRST TREE TO
 MARK THE SITE OF A GREAT INDUSTRY AND A THRIVING CITY. HIS WAS THE
 GOOD FORTUNE TO LIVE TO SEE HIS VISION REALIZED, AND TO SEE THEM
 BOTH DEVELOP AND PROSPER, THE ONE INTO AN OUTSTANDING NATIONAL

Notes:
1.) William Henry SULLIVAN was the Mayor of Bogalusa from 1914 -1929.
2.) William Henry SULLIVAN married his first wife, Elizabeth FITZRANDOLPH Sullivan, the "Mother of Bogalusa,"
on Oct. 4, 1886. She died on  July 11, 1918.
3.) William Henry SULLIVAN married his second wife, Ella Rose SALMEN in 1922. Their wedding was dubbed
"The Wedding of the Century" due to its grandest.
4.) William Henry SULLIVAN was born on Aug. 9, 1864 and he died on Jan. 26, 1929. His second wife,
Ella Rose SALMEN died about 6 weeks before he did on Sunday, Dec. 13, 1928.

          The inscription reads:

     ELIZABETH FITZRANDOLPH SULLIVAN
                                MOTHER OF BOGALUSA
    COMING HERE WITH HER HUSBAND WHEN THE FIRST GREAT PINE TREE
FELL TO MAKE WAY FOR BOGALUSA. HERS WAS ALWAYS THE WELCOMING HAND
TO EVERY NEWCOMER.
      FEW WOMEN MEANT MORE TO HER FAMILY TO A GREAT INDUSTRY AND TO
AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY THAN THE LIFE AND WORK OF THIS SWEET AND GRA -
CIOUS LADY. SHE WAS A FINE SPIRIT OF GENTLE QUALITY AND ONE WHOSE
LOVING DEEDS TIED HUMAN HEARTS TOGETHER.
      EVERY LIFE MUST END, BUT HAS SHE LIVED MORE YEARS SHE COULD HAVE
HAD NO BIGGER HOLD UPON OUR HEARTS NOR COULD WE HAVE HAD A CLEARER
APPRECIATION OF THE GREATNESS OF HER CHARACTER.
      THERE SHOULD BE THANKSGIVING FOR HAVING HAD HER LIFE AMONG US.
AND THERE SHOULD BE SOLEMN DETERMINATION THAT THE THINGS FOR WHICH
SHE STOOD SHALL BE MAINTAINED. THEREBY SHALL WE PROVE WORTHY OF
HER FRIENDSHIP. REAR TO HER A FINER MONUMENT THAN CAN BE BUILT IN
MARBLE AND BE BETTER MEN AND WOMEN FOR HAVING KNOWN HER.

1.) Elizabeth FITZRANDOLPH Sullivan, the "Mother of Bogalusa," married William Henry SULLIVAN on Oct. 4, 1886.
She was his first wife. She died on  July 11, 1918.
2.) Elizabeth FITZRANDOLPH Sullivan was born on Aug. 20, 1866 and died on July 11, 1918.

EVERY DAY DURING MY LIFE OF SIXTEEN YEARS I CONSUMED 560 CORDS OF WASTE MATERIAL OR A TOTAL OF 2,688,000 CORDS. 

I COST $25,000 BUT MY FIRE HAS DESTROYED $1,344,000 WORTH OF WHAT WAS FORMERLY CONSIDERED WASTE. 

THE COMPLETE UTILIZATION OF THE SAWMILL REFUSE IN THE MANUFACTURE OF PAPER HAS MY FIRE FOREVER EXTINGUISHED.

This may be Mildred L. Gillies (1895 � 1954). Uncle Ed may be Edward E. Gillies (1893 - 1953) but from the 1920 Census, it appears he is her husband who ran a candy store. Both were born in Michigan. Uncle Ed could have a different last name and the choice of postcards, N. O. G. N. R. R. Shops, may indicate he was doing some sales work and went on to New Orleans after visiting Bogalusa:

Microsoft's NetMeeting - Get you IP Address (this is the number used for others to call you) by clicking on "Help" then "About Microsoft's NetMeeting"

  1. NetMeeting's audio and video conferencing features let you communicate with anyone on the Internet.
