Frieda Hodel was born 11 May 1894 in Bowil, Switzerland. She was engaged to be married and her fianc� left for the United States to find a job and get settled before having her join him. After not hearing from him for a long period of time she decided to come to America to find him. She arrived in New York City aboard the Red Star Line ship Belgenland on 29 September 1925. After finding that her fiance had been committed to an insane asylum she went to work as a cook for the Low family in Cranbrook, New Jersey. She then move to San Francisco to be closer to her brother Fritz Hodel. She became a citizen of the United States 15 July 1940.
