Naomi's Diaries
Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1919 Diary ©
Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi DeSelms Cox born in Ohio October 19,
1855. She is 63 years old as 1919 begins.
Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a
number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web
pages.
She married John Hughes Cox
in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. She referred to him in the diary as
"Pa".
In the spring of 1918 she and "Pa" moved from the farm on Hannah
Road
into the town of Bowling Green to 627 Wallace Avenue. They still
owned the
farm and son Jason and his family lived there. Sons Jason, Ralph
worked the
farm, as well as some neighboring acreage, and Pa went out there
frequently and worked. Jason and his wife Rena had a disabled son
Hughie who required constant attentive care and sometimes this
fell to
Pa and Naomi, if not one of their older grandchildren who were
visiting, from time to time. The farm was located in the north
part of
Plain Township in Wood county on what is now Hannah Road.
The
acreage
north of them was Middleton Township. Some of their nearest
neighbors
included the farms of Henry Goodenough, Dan
Smith, Frank Self.
Harve and Inda Everett were across the street. Wenig, Ewing,
Coen, LeGalley, Thomas, Armitage, and Householder families were
nearby.
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox
was a farm wife and the mother of eight children in Wood
Co in
northwestern
Ohio.
She frequently refers to John
her husband, whom she calls "Pa"
and her five children living by 1911:
Ethel
(living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing;
their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild, Glenn, Donald, Dorothy, Doris and baby Ralph
(Jim's parents- Mr and Mrs Wesley Ewing, lived very near
Naomi and John Cox),
Johnny and
his wife Anna whose
parents lived in Luckey, living in Bowling Green- their little
girl was Zoe. and baby Dwight.
Ralph (R.E.) newly married to Mayme as 1919 begins and on a trip
to New York and Pennsylvania.
Mayme was the mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson who were 19, 15 and 13
respectively, as 1919 began. The five of them found a place in
Liberty township.
Clyde
or"C.H." with his dental practice in Toledo and wife Grace, and
John Emerson and Helen. Grace's parents are Emma and John Jones.
Jason and
his wife Lorena Abbott Cox who farm in Wood county
and their son Hughie. Hughie was never a well child.
Note the links to findagrave,
and other web sites that may be of interest. Italics
indicate my added
notes. As you may have noticed if you've looked at earlier
years, Naomi didn't use alot of punctuation or capital letters as
she
wrote in the diary. But starting in 1917, I have used periods and
capital letters for easier reading.

I
have done usual work and knit making a sweater for Aunt Nan's little
Grandson. Ralph came in tonight and Doris. We had Hughie all P.M.
They
got him tonight
Sun. December 28, 1919
It has been nice all
day 20 above. Glenn and Don came up this A.M. Wnet out to Ralphs.
Ralph
and Mayme came in tonight. Jasons went to Clydes.
Mon. December 29, 1919
We
did a large washing, Pa and I. It went to storming this P.M. but
they
were dry enough to bring in. Ralph and Albert brought boys down
tonight. Little Ralphs cold is quite tight.
Tues. December 30, 1919
It
has been very nice all day. Pa took the boys down to Ewings. I thot
the
others could ride down too and see Grandma awhile but he left ehm

Just
one more little entry in my little book which covers 5 years and it
seems so long I wondered if I'd ever fill it. We will all meet at
Johns
tomorrow. Ralph and Mayme have just been here.
Note: Odds are that there are
a few bad links, mistakes, etc, here. Please let me know if you
catch any, or if
you would like to see some additional links, let me know. I've had confusion about Si or Cy
or
Roy Johnson mentioned in October of 1916. After more research, I
think
Roy (Leroy) is Cy and Angelina Johnson's son. I don't know what
became
of Roy though and there is no link to him on findagrave. If
you know, let me know. In 1918 Naomi started to mention
Chester
who was a person that worked with Jason. I don't yet know if
this is
Chester Austin, Chester DeSelm or Chester Hanna.
