Descending information from Robert Kim Stevens. Gardner is first documented on the Eastern Shore in 1869, when he signed a road petition as a Ship Harbour resident. He probably was present at Ship Harbour early in the 1860s, but he was not enumerated in the census of 1861 for the Eastern Shore districts. He was enumersted in 1871 at Lower Ship Harbour as an Anglican lumberman and in 1881 as a farmer. He later moved to Dartmouth where he was enumerated in 1891-1901 as ship caulker.
