Probable Ancestry of John White, Anthony White, Hannah White Brown Swinton
Probable Ancestry of John White and Anthony White
and Hannah White (Brown)(Swinton)
of Berkeley Co and Craven Co, SC

It can be proven that John White, Anthony White, and Hannah White Brown Swinton who moved from Berkeley Co to Craven Co could NOT have been the children of William White and Susannah Murrell. Instead, it appears very likely that they were the children of John White and wife Hannah ??? and the grandchildren of Anthony White and Elizabeth Jennings of Bermuda. Perhaps more research will unearth the records to solidly prove the children of John White and Hannah.

[Note: James Brown's wife was Hannah White. Their daughter Hannah Brown married Leonard White, son of John White and Sarah Severance. Leonard White is said to have been Hannah Brown's first cousin - original source unknown to us. If so, they would have shared the same grandfather, and John White and Hannah White Brown Swinton would have been siblings. Anthony White was probably another sibling, but as far as we know, there is no proof of this relationship.]

Whereas Hannah White, widow & executrix of John White, mariner, was authorized by Act of Assembly dated 18 Dec 1718 to sell 700 acres, part of John White's estate, in order to pay his debts, & on 9 March 1714/15 sold the 700 acres to William Capers who devised the 700 acres to his only son Richard who now sells to Huger. ...

[Note: One of these dates must be in error, probably the 1718 date. The authorization to sell the land must have occurred before the land was sold. Since Hannah was referred to as a "widow", we know that John White died before Hannah who was dec'd by 1717 as proven by other records. Surely she was authorized to sell her husband's lands before her death and before she actually sold the lands. Therefore, John White must have died prior to 9 March 1714/15 when his estate land was sold but after March 29, 1707/8 when he was named in his father's will.]

[Lynch Grove later came into the possession of William White III of Berkeley Co, the grandson of William White I mentioned in the record above who was granted the land that adjoined Lynch Grove. James Brown was the husband of Hannah White. Notice that Anthony White witnessed the deed.

From the above records combined with the Craven Co records later, it would appear that John White I, mariner, son of Colonel Anthony White and Elizabeth Jennings of Bermuda, settled in SC with wife Hannah, and was probably the father of Hannah White, John White II, Anthony White, Eliza White, and Honour White. John White's will dated 24 Feb 1758 (p 4 Will Book QQ) named, among others, a son Anthony and a daughter Hannah. He also provided for William Brown's widow Mrs Hester Brown. William Brown was a son of James Brown and Hannah White. Another son of John White II, Leonard White, can be proven by the will of Joseph White, his brother. John White I, son of Anthony White of Bermuda, had a brother named Leonard, also a mariner. So Leonard was a name found in the White family earlier. Leonard (son of John White II) married Hannah Brown, daughter of Hannah White by her first husband James Brown. Hannah Brown is said to have been Leonard's first cousin. (source not given) According to the Prince Fredrick Parish records, Anthony White had a daughter named Hannah born in 1727.

Anthony White started buying in Craven Co. as early as 1724. He is described in Bk G, p. 197 as being from Bermudas Town, Berkeley Co., buying 500 acres in Craven. By 1727 his description was "planter, of Pr. George Parish."

John White was "of Berkeley Co." until the 1730s. The Church Parish records state [from Mrs. Anne Strawn] "on 1 Feb 1732/33 he ceased being 'Clark & Sexton' and delivered the Church Books to the Vestry." He was 1st elected to the Vestry at Pr Frederick Church 26 March 1733.

John White, Anthony White, James Brown (first husband of Hannah White), and William Swinton (second husband of Hannah White) can all be found in the later records of Craven Co living near the Black River in Prince Frederick's Parish.

The younger children Eliza White and Honour White have not been traced. At this time, we have no proof, but Honora, wife of John Bonnell is an interesting prospect.

The names Honora, Anthony, and Hannah are certainly names that can be associated with the family of John White and wife Hannah. Although Daniel was not a name found in the John White family, later records indicate that Daniel Bonnell's middle name was White. John Bonnell's father is said by Bonnell researchers to have been Daniel.

John Bonnell and wife Honora were in the Black River area of Craven Co near William Swinton and wife Hannah White by at least 1735. Since their son Daniel's birth and baptism were recorded in the Prince Fredrick Parish records in 1731, they may have been in the area even earlier.

The compilation of these records is the collective work of Elizabeth Girardeau, John Morrel, and Frances Cullom Harper. All three are Murrell/Morrell descendants - as well as Elizabeth's husband. Elizabeth also descends from John White and wife Sarah Severance who moved from Berkeley Co to Craven Co. It is strongly suggested that the original records be obtained whenever possible since abstracts do sometimes contain errors.
