Joseph Picard of Clayton

Joseph Picard of Clayton, New York

Added February 4, 2004

For numerous years I have been gathering information from descendents about a line of Picards with connections to Clayton, Jefferson Co, New York. They have traced thier lineage back to Joseph and Elisabeth Picard. They family surname has also appeared as Picar, Pecor, and Pecore in a variety of records. Their descendant report is displayed below. "LINEAGE CONTINUES" indicates that the line continues in my database.

Shortly after the first of the 2004 New Year, a group of descendents of the Alexandre Noiret dit Picard family discovered a very possible connection between Alexandre's grandson Joseph Noiret dit Picard and Joseph Picard of Clayton, New York. The various people working on these lines are sharing information and sorting out whether or not this is the same person. Briefly, here is the descendant outline from Alexandre Noiret dit Picard to Joseph Noiret dit Picard:

Alexandre Noiret dit Picard (1731-?)
m 1756 at Notre Dame de Montreal, Quebec
Jeanne Quenneville (1719-?)
Alexandre Noiret dit Picard (1761-?)
m 1781 at Les Cedres, Soulanges, Quebec
Marie Josephe Martin dit St. Jean (1764-1840)
Joseph Noiret dit Picard (1797-?)
1m 1820 at St. Polycarpe, Quebec
Angelique Veronneau (?-?)

2m ?
Elisabeth Cyre (deSerre) (?-?)

An intriguing clue is that Joseph Noiret dit Picard was born on Jun 18, 1797 at Les Cedres, Soulanges, Quebec. Joseph Picard of Clayton, New York's age on the 1850 census places him born about 1797, born Canada. The next intriguing clue is that Joseph Noiret dit Picard was married to an Elisabeth Cyre, Ser, Syre, or deSerre, a name very similar to that of the wife of Joseph Picard of Clayton, New York. She was called Elizabeth or Rebecca Slair, Simar, our Seymour.

Generation No. 1

1. Joseph1 Picard was born 1794 in Canada, and died. He married Elizabeth Slair. She was born Abt. 1806 in Canada, and died.

(my NOTE: there are 4 male children listed in 1840. Note that there are only 3 male children is this family. If this is really Joseph Noiret dit Picard, was this other male child Joseph, son of Angelique Veronneau?)

Source Family Contact:
Name is Joseph Pecor/Picard. b. Canada in approximately 1794. M. abt.1826 Rebecca/Elizabeth ?Slair?, b.approx 1806. Sons: Gabriel and Lewis (1827) born in Quebec, may have been twins. I realize this is very limited information. I have not been able to obtain any more except for the later period of his life which was in Clayton, NY. I feel confident he was born and married in Quebec but don't know where. His wife's name is uncertain. First name Rebecca on son's death certificate and Elizabeth on Census, could be full name is Rebecca Elizabeth. One Son Charles was born on Wellesley Island, NY. All other children born in NY.

Fatal Accident
A sad and fatal accident occurred on Friday afternoon last, about 3 o'clock, at Guyot's Saw Mill. A young girl, named Julia Pecor, between 10 and 11 years old, went to the Saw mill above mentioned, under the west end of the mill, with a lad of 13 or 14 years, where they were picking up small remnants of slabs. It appears that the girl was waving her apron over a horizontal shaft 1-1/2 inches in diameter, connected with a buzz saw above, in the wind produced by its rapid motion, the shaft revolving at the rate of 400 times per minute. There was a pile of slabs under the shaft, on which she stood, her apron and clothing wound around the shaft, drawing her under, carrying her around several times; in this process her head, by striking the sharp edge of a slab or corner of a piece of timber in an upright position, was completely scalped, one of the ears also being taken off, one of her limbs were broken, and she was otherwise bruised; the scalp lay some 2 or 3 feet from her body. The space through which she was taken beneath the shaft was from 10 inches to a foot in width. She endeavored to get hold of the boy who stood near, while she was being carried around the shaft...but he, being much frightened, ran out and called for help. The wounded girl was taken to her home on River street, where she died about three hours afterwards; she retained her senses to the last. This is the most horrid accident we have been called upon to record, and should be a warning to the young not to play about machinery.

Unidentified newsclipping - June 24, 1908
Stephen Bonacci, aged 51 years, died yesterday at his home, No. 344 Factory street. He came to this city twenty years ago, upon his arrival from Italy, and was a member of the local R. P. Flower Italian society. Besides his widow he leaves three daughters, Mrs. William Belrose of Oswego and Misses Rose and Ida Bonacci of this city; also three sons, Joseph and Myron of this city and Daniel Bonacci* of Carthage. The funeral will be held from the Sacred Heart church at 9:30 to-morrow forenoon.

* It was common in the early days for the step-children of a union to assume the name of the step-father -- apparently without any formal name change. Also, it has been found that in later years those who went by their step-fathers' names would revert to their birthnames. In this case, all the children of Mary Pecor were listed as Bonacci children. It is known that they all went by their Lalone names in later years.
Mr. Bonacci's widow was Mary Pecor Lalone Bonacci. After Bonacci's death she married a Briscoe P. Morgan.
