Alexander and Janet had at least two children. Robert (1820) our direct ancestor who married Janet McKIE, and a daughter Mary Holmes TAYLOR (1822).

I was also advised by a descendant that Alexander Taylor & Janet Homes married on the 30th August 1819
in the High Church Parish, Paisley - name of Minister - Rob Burns.

105. Janet HOLMES was born about 1800 in possibly Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland.

A descendant advised that a small child she can remember her grandmother getting a telegram advising her that Lady Runsimon (have no idea of the spelling) had passed away - apparently she was a Scottish relative. Her mother always claimed that her mother was a distant relative of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother....but takes this with a grain of salt.....she is of the opinion that the telegram was sent from Janet Holmes.

Surname variant in Paisley includes HOLMS. See GenesReunitedThomas Brock Holms 1828 Paisley. Scotland UK.

112. William KEWN was born about 1785 in possibly Isle of Man. He died in 1864 in possibly Prince Edward St No 2 Court 1, Everton. He married Judith QUAYLE about 1810 in possibly Church of England Parish Church of Jurby (Isle of Man). William resided 1 on 28 Sep 1827 in Crooked Lane, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. He was employed 2 as Carpenter. He was employed as possibly Victualler Legs of Man 8 Crooked Lane in 1825/1829. He was employed 3 as Shipwright (Constructor and repairer of ships) on 28 Sep 1827. He was employed as possibly Victualler Crooked Lane, Liverpool in 1832.

Kewn is a celtic name from the Ise of Man, which translates as Johnson. KEWIN, contracted from MacEoin, John's son.'
In the province of Ulster the English family of Bissett, seated in the Glius, in the County of Antrim, assumed the Irish surname of MACEOIN, MAKEON, from an ancestor HUAN, or JOHN, Bissett."+
PATRICK MCION was one of the 24 "Keys of Mann" in 1417. (This name is wrongly spelt MCGON in the Statute Law Book).
In the Charter of the Bishopric of Mann, A.D. 1505, we find "Confirmation of Churches, Lands and Liberties, given, granted, and made by the most noble Lord Thomas, Earl of Derby, Lord Stanley, Lord of Mann and the Isles, to HUAN, Bishop of Sodor and to his successors."++ Compare-(Irish) KEON, McKEON, McKEOWN, and McKEOWIN; (Gaelic) McEWEN; (Welsh) BEVAN. MACION [1417], MCJOHN [1429], M'KEWNE [1404], McKEWN [1511], KEWYNE [1440], KEWEN [1609], KEWN [1671], KEWNE [1672], KEWIN [1700], KEON [1714], KEOIN [1732]

SURNAMES OF CELTIC ORIGIN DERIVED FROM PERSONAL NAMES
TREATING OF THE SURNAMES DERIVED FROM PERSONAL OR " CHRISTIAN " NAMES" it will be convenient, though not quite in accordance with the order of historical sequence, to begin with those which are formed from the Biblical and Hagiological names imported by the early Christian missionaries. These names were in very frequent use in Ireland and the Isle of Mann. It is important to observe that while the names of saints were themselves given in baptism, they more frequently gave rise to secondary Christian names formed by prefixing the word Giolla "servant."* the name of JOHN (Eoin) became a common Christian name amongst the Celts, but its derivative Giolla Eoin, " John's servant," was still more generally used. Both these classes of names have contributed to the list of Manx Surnames. For instance, while the descendants of Eoin were called MACEOIN, and ultimately KEWIN, the descendants of GIOLLA-EOIN are known by the corrupted surnames GELLING and LEWIN [From ManxNoteBook vol i,1885]

Family lore states the family originated in Isle of Man(?) as a family member had always been told by her Mother that
prior to Liverpool, James KEWN Jnr branch of the Kewns had come from the Isle of Man and that prior to that, the name was Scottish and was originally MacKewn or McKewn or some such spelling. No-one seems to know for sure why the Mc or Mac
part was dropped at some stage but she gathered that the Isle of Man and Scotland bit of the history was way, way back. When she visited the Isle of Man and visited the Family History Centre, there were lots of Kewns listed but mostly spelt differently - Keown - so although I have come across a James Kewn in the Isle of Man, she rather doubts it is far back enough to be related to us. The surnames KEWN, KEWNE, KEWIN, KEWINE appear to be variants of same name on the Island.

Another researcher, Alfred Kewn and his wife Irene who live in Linconshire now but originally lived in Liverpool has sent me his family tree and he too believes his branch of the Kewn's came from the Isle of Man prior to Liverpool and Scotland/Ireland before that. Alf and I can't find the link between his branch and that of James KEWN Jnr but we both think we must be related in some way. Regarding the possibly of the KEWN's coming from Ireland before that, a descendant of James KEWN thought about the colouring of the older Kewns with "black hair and blue eyes" and thinks it "could well be right.".

I know of four sons born to William and Judith KEWN : William (1811), Philip (1818), John (1824) and James Carrell (1827) our direct ancestor who married Mary Drake JONES. However, I have just commenced researching this couple. They possibly also had three daughters Ann KEWN, Judith Quayle KEWN, Ellen Quayle KEWN and a son Thomas KEWN.

Judith is the anglicised form of the more common Manx (Isle of Man) christian name of JONEY/JONY.
Liverpool Record Office advised : "in the 1841 Liverpool directory there is a Judith Kewn listed as a Victualler at 12 Crooked Lane". Although Judith was a Victualler (a Supplier of food and provisions) in the early l800s, there were no licensing laws, and it is estimated that in Liverpool, one dwelling in seven sold beer. In 1830, the Beer House Act was passed and any householder could obtain a licence to sell beer for two guineas. 24,342 licenses were issued in Liverpool alone.

1843 Gores Directory lists : Judith Kewn Victualler 12 Crooked Lane.

114. Samuel JONES was born about 1773 in Mold (Yr Wyddgrug), Flintshire Wales. He married 1 Jane DRAKE on 17 Jul 1820 in Holy Trinity Church of England, Liverpool, Lancashire. Samuel resided in 1851 in 1 Sun Street Toxteth Park, Liverpool. He was employed 2 as Labourer.

1851 Census : 1 Sun St.Toxteth Park, Lancaster
Jones Samuel, Head Wid. age 78, Lab. Born Wales Mold
Jones Frances sister. Un. age 63 Born Wales Mold

Samuel was the father of Mary Drake JONES who married James Carrell KEWN. Mary and James' son, Samuel William KEWN, the grandson of Samuel and Jane JONES was born at 1 Sun Street Toxteth Park on 18th Mar 1849, therefore the following Census entry would most likely be for either Mary's father, however this entry may infact be for her grandfather.

Further reasons for Samuel Jones (born about 1773 in Wales) possibly being the grandfather, rather than the father of Mary, are :
(1) As Samuel and Jane married on 17 Jul 1820 he would have been approximately 47 years of age.
(2) When Mary Drake JONES is born in 1823 he would have been approximately 50 years of age. Although not an unusual age for fatherhood, his age at marriage indicates further investigation.

Samuel had a younger sister Frances, (born about 1788 also in Mold, Wales) who was either the aunt or great aunt of Mary Drake JONES. The Census for 1 Sun Street Toxteth Park, Lancaster, shows
Jones Samuel, Head Wid. age 78, Lab. Born Wales Mold (not listed in 1871 Census)
Jones Frances sister. Un. age 63 Born Wales Mold (not listed in 1871 Census)

Samuel and Jane possibly had a son named Thomas Narrimore JONES. Thomas was a witness at the 1848 marriage of Samuel and Jane's daughter Mary Drake JONES and James Carrell KEWN. However, Thomas Narrimore JONES may have been Mary's cousin or even unrelated.
