I just received copy of a Confederate Pension Application (#3339) for a Stephen Courtney, resident of Greene County, TN (1901). One of the papers accompanying the application, is a note that was written 19 Nov 1902, from a T.N. Haun, to a Frank Moses(?) of Knoxville, TN. The contents of the note are not really important (to this posting) -- I presume that Mr. Moses was the attorney that was handling this pension claim and the note is inquiring on the status of the the application (on behalf of Stephen Courtney).

What is interesting about the note, are the Courtney and Haun names. On preprinted stationary, the heading reads:

Hale & Haun
Growers and Shippers of
Hay, Grain in Car Lots Only
Mohawk, Tenn

Preprinted in the upper left corner is the name, S.P. Hale
Preprinted in the upper right corner is the name, T.N. Haun

So, we have a T.N. Haun writing a letter on behalf of a Stephen Courtney. If have have constructed these Courtney lines correctly, this Stephen Courtney is the son of James Courtney & Elizabeth McBroom.

We also have a Stephen Courtney that at some point, changed his name to Andrew Jackson Haun. Said Stephen had a child named, Theodore Napoleon Courtney. Theodore also changed his name to Haun. As for the name change, I can't speak much on the accuracy of that information. It seems to be what those believe that have done far more research on this than I, so I'll go with it for now (only stating that I have not yet researched that aspect, so am assuming it to be true at this point). This particular Stephen Courtney/Haun, would be the son of George W Courtney (brother of the James Courtney cited above). I don't believe that this family (Stephen & Theodore) still had connections to Greene County, as late as 1901 -- but, I could be incorrect about that. From my understanding, they were in Kansas well before that time.

So, my question is this: Can someone please tell me a little more about this T.N. Haun, that apparently was a business owner as late as 1901 in Greene County, TN? This strikes me as a little odd that we have on one hand, T.N. Haun writing a letter for a Stephen Courtney in 1901; and on the other hand, a Stephen Courtney that had a son named Theodore Napoleon Courtney, where both of them changed their surname to Haun (making the son, T.N. Haun). So, I'm interested in understanding more about the connection between the Haun and both Courtney families, that appear to have been well associated.

I appreciate any insight.
Regards,
Morgan H Courtney {[email protected]}
