Wife is a descendant of William Clark and Mary Heffner through Susan A. Clark

Notes on William Clark:
Orphan’s Court documents from Centre County, Pennsylvania dated January 1831 show that James Clark petitioned the court for guardians for John, William and Sarah, his minor children under 14 and that Henry Clark as a minor over 14 petitioned on his own behalf, so that they could have guardians appointed to collect a sum of money that their late mother had been bequeathed.  In January 1839 the four children signed a release to their guardian William McEwen and stated that they had received the money.  At this time Sarah signed as Sarah Hess.

The 1830 census for Walker Twp., Centre Co., PA shows James Clark with a younger wife, four males and a female.  These would be Henry, John, William, Sarah and Thomas and wife Mary.

The 1840 census for Venango (Clarion) Co., PA shows James Clark, his wife, sons Henry, John and William from the first marriage, 3 younger sons and 3 young daughters.  Sarah was married before 1839.

The 1850 census for Rockland Twp., Venango Co., PA shows William Clark 30; Mary (Heffner) 25 (actually 17); Maria 2; John ½

The 1860 census for Richland Twp., Venango Co., PA shows William Clark 40; Mary 35 (should be 27); Maria 11; John 10; Mary 8; James (twin) 5; Nancy (twin) 5; William 3; Sarah (twin) ½; Jane (twin) ½

The 1870 census for Ashland Twp., Clarion Co., PA shows William Clark 50; no wife; John 19; James 14; Nancy 14, Henry 13, Charles 8; Margaret (twin) 6; Abba [Susan Abigail] (twin) 6.

William is documented many times in the property tax records starting with 1840 in Richland Twp., Venango Co., PA.  In 1849 he had a new house added to the tax list. In 1879 he lived on a lot owned by his brother Henry in Salem Twp., Clarion Co. PA.  In 1880 he bought 5 acres from Henry and in the same year sold the land to John Roads (Rhodes).

Several documents show William buying or selling land.  On some of these his wife Mary also is a signatory.

William is on a court document in 1880 when the property bequeathed by James Clark in his 1868 will to his wife Mary and to his sons Henry and Josiah is divided.   Oddly enough I could not find William on the 1880 census even though these two documents show that he was there.  He was probably living with a relative or boarding alone.  His children had gone, and his two youngest were living with uncles on the 1880 census.

Notes for Mary Heffner:

Mary Heffner Clark and William Clark are  mentioned on a list of those buried at the Nickleville Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Richland County, Venango County, Pennsylvania, although there is no gravestone for her or William.

My grandfather, William Henry Clark, son of William and Mary Heffner Clark, died October 22, 1920, and on his death certificate it names his mother’s maiden name as Mary Heffner.  It gave her birthplace as Pennsylvania.

The death certificate for Susan A. Clark Ward gave her parents as William Clark and Mary Heffner.

According to the History of Venango County Pennsylvania by Charles A. Babcock, J.H.Beers & Company 1919, "James Clark, was the father of William Clark who married Mary Heffner."

Mary was the oldest child in her family and must have had to help her mother with the younger children.  When she was 15 there were already seven younger children with more on the way.  She may have married at that age in order to get away from taking care of younger siblings, but she soon had eleven children of her own including three sets of twins.  William was fourteen years older than Mary, but on the censuses of 1850 and 1860 they misinformed the census taker to make her seem older.  By the time her oldest daughter, Mariah Jane, died in 1912 only 5 of her children were still living, and one was my grandfather William Henry, who died in 1920.
