BAKER FAMILY HISTORY AND GENEALOGY

Descendants of Andrew Baker

Also Known As Andrew Baker Of Grant County, Kentucky

Andrew Baker descendants have taken the DNA tests and they match my Reason Baker line [see Madison Co.] The tests prove that we have a common ancestor but do not show us how we connect.  We are looking for help from anyone that knows how the two families are connected.  My cousin took the test for me as it must be a male that carries the Baker surname to qualify for testing.  He is test number 12019 in the light green "Unknown Baker" group, all in the light green group have matching DNA.  You can see the results of these DNA tests at:

Generation No. 1

1. ANDREW1 BAKER was born Abt. 1798, and died Aft. 1850 in Grant Co, KY. He married UNKNOWN.

Notes for ANDREW BAKER:

Andrew Baker came from Rockcastle Co., to Menefee Co., to Pendleton County.

On the 1850 Grant Co. Census Andrew Baker is on page 346

Daniel (Brake) Baker is on page 345

NOTE:

Andrew Baker came from Rockcastle County to Pendleton County, according to the Barton films in the Pendleton County Public Library. Several of the papers also state that Louisa was born in Menifee County, but she was born ca. 1835 and Menifee wasn't formed until 1869. They may just be referring to an area that later became Menifee, but this does create a puzzle, because the family was in Pendleton Co. and in Grant Co. much earlier than 1835. Perhaps they left and came back?

DNA Tests have shown a match between this family and the Reason Baker of Madison County and his son Edwin Baker of Boone County family. The connection has not yet been found.    J.R.B.

The following was written by David Baker [a desc. of Andrew Baker:

Andrew Baker, born abt 1798 in Madison County, KY. and also lived in Rockcastle, Pendleton, and Grant County, Kentucky. There is a good chance his father was John L. Baker although it could be a number of other Bakers.

If John was his father, then John showed up on the Madison Co. tax roles in 1795 and a while thereafter and in 1803 he bought 65 acres on Silver Creek, Madison Co. Ky. John then appeared on the Rockcastle tax roles in 1816, while Andrew remained in Madison County and was listed as a property owner though not 21 years old.

Then Andrew appeared on the Rockcastle County census in 1820 and 1830. He purchased 127 acres on Skaggs Creek, Rockcastle county, Kentucky. John also bought land on Skaggs Creek when he obtained 50 acres there. Andrew was in Grant County, Kentucky as early as 1831 since his son William was born there in 1831. He was in the 1840 census with no land and classified as a laborer. By the Grant County, Kentucky 1850 census, he was 52 years old, without a wife and with 3 kids still at home. Andrew did not show up on the 1860 census so I suspect he was dead by then.

Hi Linda,
What I have to say about this stuff is maybe just my opinion and some of it is just nitpicking but I'll go ahead and furnish information that you can do what you will:
My cousin Richard (Rick) Baker and his wife Anna were the ones pushing the John Baker angle as Andrew's father.  John Baker had a son Andrew and they both bought land on Skaggs Creek in Rockcastle County according to land and tax records which Anna looked up.  However, it appears to me that Andrew stayed put there on Skaggs Creek while our Andrew was more of an itinerate farm laborer who may or may not have owned any land.  The big problem as I see it is that his children were born all over indicating a lot of moving as follows:
Rockcastle 1823
Grant 1825
Pendleton 1827
Grant 1831, 1834
Menefee or Madison 1837
Grant 1839
So, I am going to wait to see who Andrew is really related to before I accept them as his father.  Names like Basil, Reason, Wansley and others come up all the time but I have yet to find one that had a son named Andrew born in 1798 in Madison County on their records.
Dotson Thorpe Baker's daughters: (1) Frances Marian or Francis Marion was listed as a girl and there was a record of her husband John D. Perkins being married to her in Grant Co.
  (2) Dr Wolfe who claims a direct relationship with Easter Luvinia (Lula) Baker since she was married to Benjamin Franklin (Red Ben) Wolfe says her name was: Easter as in the holiday and not Esther as the queen in the Bible and she had a different spelling of her 2nd name also.
Thornton Posey Baker you have listed with an unknown child while I have:  Albert Owen Baker b. Grant Co. KY 29 Oct 1872 d. 12 Apr 1946 buried Williamstown, KY m. Bettie Lee Clemmons b. 18 Jan 1882 Pendleton Co. KY daughter of James Clemmons and Mary Martin.  This information was obtained from his Uncle James Alvin McMillian who died 21 Oct 1957 and left his records in the Public Library Newport, KY. Also my grandfather was named Albert Aaron Baker and it seems that lots of these names run in the family.
Daniel Brake Baker had a daughter Nora and the spelling of her middle name may have been Elsibeth instead of Elizabeth.  It's hard telling what name they really meant for her to have.  Some of those folks were not great spellers.  I have a copy of a will made out for one of the McMillians and his last name was spelled wrong but he put down his "X" and others witnessed to it.  He owned a lot of land too.
David
