Charles died 20 Mar 1853, Grand Manan Isl., NB, Canada.

Charles and his wife Abigail were first cousins. Ref: from record written in Charles Dyer Wilcox Bible.

Charles Dyer Wilcox came from Burlington to Grand Manan Island in April 1826 along with Silas Card and William Henry where they established a ship yard at Deep Cove. Silas was a brother of Abigail and son-in-law of William Henry.

Four years later the schooner WILLIAM HENRY was launched. In the meantime the little community was saddened by the drowning accident on October 13, 1828 in Grand Harbor when William Henry, James Parker, William Ross and Silas Card were upset in an open boat. Silas Card swam to the shore, the other three were drowned. Other vessels built at or near the Wilcox-Card yard were ELIZA in 1832, ABILAIL in 1833, VENTURE in 1839, the brigantine EXILE in 1840. Another vessle, the TALLAHASSIE, may have been launched in 1844. Family records include the EAGLE of which there is no registry record. The TALLAHASSIE, a new vessel was anchored off from the ship yard when it became necessary to move the vessel to a safer anchorage at Parker's Cove due to an oncoming storm. It was while the vessel was being shifted that Charles Dyer's son Hyram was knocked overboard by the boom and drowned. His body was found later at White Head Island and buried at Grand Harbour. After the tragic death of his nineteen year old son, Charles Dyer retired from active ship building. Previous to this time he felt his luck was changing. The EXILE proved a rather unlucky ship. She had to have considerable repairs since launching, one occasion having the bottom sheathed with copper due to havoc of ship worms in the Caribbean coastal trade.

All but two of Charles Dyer Wilcox's family remained and lived out there days on Grand Manan Island. Silas moved to Eastport, Maine. Mary Wilcox married John Benjamin Card and they established their home in Burlington, NS. The decendants of this pioneer family may be found living on Grand Manan from the third generation and even on to the seventh. (1977) Today many operate the extensive fisheries fleet obtaining a rich harvest from the waters of the Bay of Fundy, others hold responsible positions on coastal ships. Some may be found engaging in the professions of Science, Education and Commerce, adding their skills to a progressive community.

William died 15 Jun 1892, Grand Manan,. William Wilcox born probably Burlington, N.S., 14 April 1815, died Grand Manan 15 June 1892. He was a sailor most of his life having went to sea at 13 years of age. He travelled to many world ports, probably in the Card vessels as well as those owned by his father. A capable navigator he soon rose to Mate's position. His skill was tested in the epic voyage of the brigantine Exile. While on a routine trip from Pictou, N.S. carrying coal to Norwich, Connecticut, the vessel was caught in a severe gale off the coast of Nova Scotia on November 16, 1846 and sustained loss of sails and spars in the encounter. After temporary repairs they were under way until another gale stripped off their sails. For nine days they were driven by the continuing gale under bare poles out into the Atlantic and far from land. During this time they jettisoned part of the cargo of coal to lighten the vessel and kept the pumps going to save her from sinking. When the gale moderated they were able to repair some damage and patch up what sail they had left. In the vessel's condition it was considered unwise to attempt a return to the coast against the continuing westerly gales. Capt. Nelson Card and his mate William laid out a course for the coast of Ireland. William had never been in any of the Irish ports but was familiar with the area having sailed along the coast on former trips. After many anxious days, buffeted by the elements and short of food, they reached the Irish coast near Crookhaven on New Year's eve. Adverse winds kept them from entering port until Jan. 3, 1847, with loss of bulwarks, boats etc., and part of the cargo thrown overboard. Due to damage encountered on the passage and the cost of repairs for a return journey, it was decided to sell the vessel and the remainder of coal. George Scott, a merchant of Cork became the new owner of the vessel. William remained for nearly a year guiding the new owners in handling a brigatine. Whild in Ireland, William met and married Jane Driscoll and came to Grand Manan Island in the spring of 1848 to establish their home in Deep Cove.
