Hiram Larrimore

Hiram Larrimore
& Mary Ann Short

Two dates have been found for Hiram Larrimore's birth, both being in 1828. The first is February 20 and the second June 24. His death certificate uses the second date. He was born in Franklin County, Missouri.

The Larrimore name is found with at least three different spellings connected with Hiram. His grave stone and his obituary use the Laramore spelling, while death certificate uses the Larimore spelling, and his wife's obituary uses the Larmore spelling.

Other spellings of the name within the family have included Laramar, Larimere, and Lamar. The most common spelling within branches of our family I've been in contact use the Larimore spelling.

Mary Ann Short & Hiram Larrimore

Hiram was about thirty-three when the Civil War broke out. He served over four years in the Union Army during the war, with Company K, 12th Regiment, Missouri Cavalry.

It's believed that Hiram may have had a wife prior to Mary Short, but that has not been proven. However, when he took Mary Ann Short as his bride about 1867, he was nearly fourty years of age. A previous wife is very likely.

Mary Short was born February 14, 1845 in Leesville, Henry County, Missouri, the daughter of David Short and Hannah Carleton.

Very little of Hiram and Mary's life is known. Their four children were all born in Leesville. By 1880 they were living in Benton County, Missouri and around 1916 they moved to Garland, Kansas.

The four children they produced were: John H. (1868-1903), Sarah Katherine (1871-1945), Emma Jane (1875-1930, and Amos H. (1877-1878).

Hiram never learned to read or write. He lived five years in Garland before his death on October 29, 1921. He was buried with full military honors in Fort Scott's National Cemetery.

Mary moved to Nevada, Missouri shortly after Hiram's death and died there on March 12, 1923. She is supposedly buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, but I've never located the grave. However, many there have been destroyed or are unreadable.
